Big hands or small hands — does it affect your ATCL piano repertoire choice? 🎹
The answer is: yes… but not in the way most people think.
At diploma level, hand size doesn’t determine your potential — it influences which repertoire allows you to sound your best under pressure.
✨ Bigger hands often suit:
• Wide Romantic textures
• Octaves & large chords
• Liszt / Rachmaninoff repertoire
✨ Smaller hands often excel in:
• Clarity & agility
• Bach / Mozart transparency
• Refined voicing & articulation
But ATCL examiners care MOST about:
✔️ Musical authority
✔️ Stylistic understanding
✔️ Tone control
✔️ Technical security
The smartest repertoire is not the “hardest” piece —
it’s the one that feels technically idiomatic for YOUR hands.
Because the best diploma performances come from freedom, not survival. 🎼

🎹 What is the difference between a child learner vs an adult learner in ATCL Piano Exam? Although the ATCL exam has the same syllabus, level, and marking standard for everyone, the learning journey should be completely different.
👦 Child learners need a strong focus on building technique safely, developing confidence, protecting growing hands, and learning step-by-step through shorter and more manageable repertoire.
🧑 Adult learners, on the other hand, often benefit from stronger focus, deeper musical understanding, and more goal-driven learning, allowing them to explore longer works, emotional expression, tone, and interpretation more efficiently. ✨ In short, children should build safely over time, while adults develop musical depth more directly. Same exam — but definitely not the same journey. 🎹💜
