Hello everyone!

Whether you've heard of me through a friend, or if you're finding me for the first time through my profile, I want to share a little bit about myself so you can be confident that you're choosing a reliable maths tutor.

Below is some information about me, my experience, and my approach to tutoring. I hope it is helpful.

Please do get in touch if you have any questions. I look forward to hearing from you!

About me

My name is Jamie Mayor. I'm 27 years old, a maths graduate from the University of Bath (MMath), and former Maths Teacher and Key Stage 5 Coordinator at a well known and very successful secondary school and sixth form in Bath.

I have been a Maths tutor on and off since I was in sixth form, alongside my studies and career, with roughly 4-5 years experience in total across a variety of ages and abilities (as well as 4 years experience as a full-time teacher). I'm fortunate that I discovered my passion for teaching and tutoring at a relatively young age, as I have already been able to guide many students at primary, secondary and sixth form level towards their goals.

In recent years, I had to stop almost all of my tutoring due to the demands of being a teacher, but I have since made the decision to become a tutor full-time. I am thoroughly looking forward to rediscovering the reward that comes from building strong relationships with my tutees and supporting them to make progress both in the short and long term. If I can pass on just a little bit of my infectious enthusiasm for the subject at the same time, then all the better!

I would like to keep my tutoring experience as varied and fulfilling as I possibly can, and so I welcome tutees of all levels from any background. Whether you are preparing for GCSE, A-level or University entrance exams, or just aiming to improve your general numeracy skills, it would be a privilege to give you the support that you need to meet your goals.

Teaching experience

In total, I have roughly 4-5 years experience tutoring. This would have started whilst I was in sixth form studying for my A-levels, continuing on and off through my time at University and during my career as a teacher. During this time, I have tutored students at primary, secondary and sixth form level, some being short term in the lead up to exams and others being longer term.

I also have 4 years experience as a full-time teacher, and in my last year I was appointed KS5 Maths Coordinator for my school, giving me responsibility for all of our A-level students. During my teaching career, I was lucky enough to teach every type of group you could think of - from lower Year 7 right the way up to Year 13 further maths A-level.

My experience, both tutoring and teaching, has been invaluable in helping me shape the tutor I strive to be going forwards.

Approach to tutoring

I believe a simple approach to tutoring is the best one. I aim to work closely with my tutees to identify their goals, and create a plan of action to follow to give them the very best chance of success. My experience will enable me to deliver high-quality lessons, and these will be supplemented with homework and independent tasks to consolidate knowledge and cement understanding between each visit.

Regular communication between tutee and tutor is key, and maintaining this with my tutees throughout their journey with me will be one of my highest priorities. This way, we can celebrate successes and milestones towards our goal, but also intervene in good time if any part of our action plan needs adjusting. In the same way, I would always encourage tutees to approach me to share their thoughts on how things are going, so that I can continue with what's working and amend anything that I need to.
