Happy Friday! 🍂💚

We’ve had another wonderful week filled with exploring, learning and lots of fun across our settings!

🐣 The Nest have loved exploring the garden, with the slide being a firm favourite! We’ve also enjoyed spotting the horses in the fields and getting messy with shaving foam and paint, developing our fine motor skills as we created lots of marks.

🌿 Pips have been exploring different textures and learning new words to describe how things feel, including soft, rough, smooth and bumpy. We’ve also been spotting tractors and diggers through the window and using them as inspiration for our drawings.

🍎 Apples enjoyed a lovely woodland walk, collecting natural resources to bring back into our play. We’ve also enjoyed small-world and roleplay activities, while exploring emotions and feelings through The Colour Monster.

🌳 Trees have been enjoying exciting adventures, exploring our new cabin and going on nature walks while listening carefully to the sounds around us. We’ve also collected natural resources to create our very own nature wands and experimented with colourful painting and colour mixing.

🌟 A huge congratulations to Becky, who successfully completed her Forest School training this week! We’re so proud of her and can’t wait to see all the wonderful outdoor learning opportunities she brings to the children. 🌿

Why is Makaton important in the early years? 🤍

Makaton is a form of communication that combines signs, symbols and speech to help children express themselves and understand others.

In the early years, Makaton can support children who are still developing their speech, helping them communicate their needs, feelings and ideas while building confidence and reducing frustration.
It can be particularly valuable for children with additional needs or communication difficulties, but it can benefit all children by supporting language, listening and understanding.

At nursery, we use Makaton alongside spoken language to give every child a way to communicate, connect and feel heard. 🤍

As the online world continues to change, so does the way we think about protecting our children and respecting their privacy.

As an early years setting, the safety and wellbeing of the children in our care will always be our priority. As part of this, we are reviewing how we capture and share photographs and videos from life within our setting.

Moving forward, you may notice that we focus less on showing children's faces in our photographs. Instead, we will capture the little moments that make nursery so special — the messy play, creative activities, exploring, laughter, friendships, learning and all the wonderful experiences that happen each day.

We want to continue sharing the fun, joy and magic of childhood with our families, while being increasingly mindful of children's digital privacy and their online footprint.

You will notice this change in the format of our social media over the coming weeks as we move to this style of capturing those moment.

Our Weekly Rundown 🌿

It’s been another lovely week across the rooms, filled with exploring, creativity, learning and plenty of opportunities to develop new skills!

In Nest, we’ve been exploring reflections using mirrors, silver balls and foil, encouraging the children to investigate their surroundings and discover what they can see. We’ve also been learning about different farm animals and the sounds they make, supporting communication and language development.

In Pips, we’ve been getting creative while exploring different textures through painting on tin foil and cling film. We’ve also had lots of fun in the sandpit with our new mud kitchen, practising scooping and transferring sand between different pots and containers while developing our coordination and independence.

Apples have been busy learning our days of the week song, building friendships and practising turn-taking through simple games. We’ve also been developing our communication and Makaton skills, while exploring maths through sorting, matching, pouring and puzzles. Our new cosy garden area has been a lovely space to enjoy some quieter story time together.

In Trees, we’ve been getting creative making funny-face trees using our hands and fingers. We’ve also enjoyed walks to the forest, where the children loved exploring and climbing. To finish the week, we made strawberry yoghurt together, cutting up strawberries and mixing them into the yoghurt — a lovely hands-on experience!

The Nest 🐣
The Nest have been exploring different ways to make marks using paint in a poly pocket, supporting fine motor skills while creating some beautiful pictures. We’ve also been exploring sounds with instruments, pots, pans and blocks, introducing words such as “bang”, “crash” and “loud”.

Pips 🍂
Pips enjoyed their very first walk together through the woods to the field, playing running games and talking about the sights and sounds around us. We’ve also been getting creative with autumn colours, using what we’ve spotted outside to inspire our paintings.

Apples 🍎
Apples have been enjoying group times and games, creating opportunities to build friendships and strengthen bonds. We’ve explored sensory play to support calming and emotional regulation, as well as building roads with cars, towers with blocks and using our imaginations through construction play. We also planted daffodil bulbs and learned about caring for things as they grow. 🌱

Trees 🌳
Trees have been recognising the first letters of their names and making connections between letters and their own names. We also enjoyed a walk looking for mushrooms and noticing their different shapes, sizes and colours. 🍄 Our Monkey Puzzle focus has continued through storytelling and role play, supporting imagination, communication and confidence.

🦷 Why might my child bite?

Biting can be upsetting, but it can also be a way for young children to communicate when they don’t yet have the words or skills to express how they’re feeling.

A child might bite when they’re frustrated, overwhelmed, excited, tired or hungry, or finding it difficult to communicate their needs. Teething can also be a reason, as biting can provide pressure and comfort to sore, emerging teeth and gums.

Sometimes children may also be exploring boundaries, testing cause and effect or seeking a response from those around them.

At nursery, we look beyond the behaviour to understand what might be triggering it. We support children with strategies such as Makaton, visual cues, teething resources, emotional activities, quiet spaces and positive ways to communicate.

💛 With patience, consistency and understanding, children can learn safer ways to express their needs and big emotions.
