By focusing on topical themes a spirit of time and place is conveyed. In 'Rainbow' for example, Osborn uses single colour formations, placing together images of trivial household objects. The importance of branding on plastic carrier bags is highlighted, introducing an aspect of commercial and social history that is fast disappearing. Lin Osborn’s paintings are inspired by the work of Barbara Rae, but by using acrylic paint and collage has since developed her own style. Although the subject Osborn wants to paint is initially photographed she tries not to reproduce the picture but create something completely different but still retaining the spirit of the original. It is the structure of the landscape, one shape against another that she likes. The shapes and textures immediately turn the work into an abstract piece.
