Before letters come marks. ✋✨✍

Mark making is one of the earliest steps toward writing. Before children form letters, they explore movement, pressure, and direction through marks. A sand tray offers a perfect, low-pressure space for this learning to happen naturally. As children draw lines, curves, and circles with their fingers, they build hand strength, coordination, and confidence. The tactile feedback from the sand helps connect the brain and body, supporting control and focus. There is no right or wrong in mark making, just exploration. These early experiences lay the foundation for later pencil control, letter formation, and a positive relationship with writing.

But...

Not all children enjoy touching sand, and that’s okay. Offer a stick, paintbrush, or tool instead. Holding an object still supports mark making, hand control, and confidence while respecting sensory preferences. Choice matters.💗

This Term we have been looking at Autumn and the wonderful colours,
We have made Diwali candles and explored colour mixing using a salad spinner which has also developed gross motor skills and coordination
We have also been Making spiders using cotton pads dipped in black paint and then used a variety of tools to hammer the pads to create spiders 🕷️

Matching number Bats to the correct numeral in our Tuff tray

Mark making using rice and exploring transportation and sound using funnels

We used pupkin spice and cornflour to create slime for the children to explore through touch and smell

We have also made Bread , Biscuits and Flapjacks and the children had the bread for snack the following day ❤️😊

What a wonderful time with lots of learning through play
