Our first harvest. The children over the course of this year have dug, planted, watered and inspected the allotment and watched the plants grow in amazement. Today they did their first harvest of their hard work. They are excited to see their pumpkins growing and cannot wait for ‘Halloween and big BIG pumpkins!’ They also were overjoyed to see their sunflowers are now taller than they are. Our pm snack was peas from the pods and sliced strawberries and a child here who does not touch fruit actually ate a big plateful of strawberries! By growing and harvesting ourselves it encourages children to try what they have produced and learning they do like some fruit and vegetables!
By simply going down to the allotment to grow some vegetables, we are helping children with all 7 areas of development. For example;
Communication and language, extending vocabulary knowledge, listening skills, holding conversations.
psed by working together, sharing tools, turn taking, and having time in nature to help our emotions.
Physical development, using gross and fine motor skills, handling tools, negotiating space, understanding the importance of being health and balanced eating.
Literacy, reading planting instructions and gardening tips, looking up mini beasts and garden bugs we find to see if they are helpful or not.
Maths, talk on size, shape, counting, quantities.
Understanding the world, talk of family customs, understanding how plants grow, what they need to survive, cause and effect, weather, joining in with the allotment community.
EAD, so about farms, exploring the mud, making scarecrows.
