Derw Newydd Derw Newydd is the new Social, Emotional & Mental Health provision of Ysgol y Deri.

The aim and purpose of Derw Newydd is:

- To provide a stable, caring and structured environment for students which will allow them to grow in self-worth.

- To provide a rich curriculum (in line with the National Curriculum) which will foster and encourage the students’ enjoyment of education, as well as their social and emotional development to the limit of their academic, physical and practical abilities.

- To provide, when appropriate, opportunities for full or part-time re-integration into mainstream schooling.

- To develop a mutually supportive network with parents, which will help students at school and in their own family and community. Students’ individual needs are addressed by specialist staff within a positive behaviour framework that seeks to build on their strengths and self esteem. Individuals are encouraged at all times to make positive choices for themselves and have regard for the needs of other individuals within the teaching and learning environment.

The new school year is fast approaching! 📚

From September, pupils in Years 7 and 8 living in households receiving Universal Credit will be able to apply for the Welsh Government’s expanded Free School Meals scheme, following the removal of the income threshold 🍴

This is the first phase of a wider rollout to other secondary school year groups 🏫

Check the eligibility criteria and apply for Free School Meals 👉 https://www.valeofglamorgan.gov.uk/en/living/schools/Free-School-Meals.aspx

Remember, the eligibility criteria for Free School Meals and the School Essentials Grant are different. According to Water Safety Wales / Diogelwch Dŵr Cymru, there are three times more accidental drownings when temperatures rise above 25°C ☀️

We're out and about this summer talking to children about water safety, we'd love it if you'd share this advice with yours.

Remember, the temperature might be rising, but the water is still cold, and cold water shock can kill.

If you find yourself in trouble in the water, float to live:
👂🏼Tilt your head back with your ears submerged
🌬️Try to breathe normally
🌊Move your hands and legs to stay afloat
🏊🏼‍♂️Once your breathing is under control, call for help or swim to safety.

If you see someone in trouble in the water:
📞Phone 999
💧Tell them to stay calm and float on their back
🛟Throw rescue equipment to help them float until help arrives
