Mysterious Tunnel Found Near Barrow

Not sure what it was but it seemed to continue for a long way underground.

There's a gate over the front. So is it to stop people getting in... Or to prevent something getting out... 😉😏

Doesn't look like it's been 'lit' for some time though...

Test Pit Teaching Aid

This was prepared in late 2019 and completed mid 2020. It is intended as an archaeological teaching aid which can be used to demonstrate how to dig a test pit and used as a display model.

It could potentially be used in a classroom situation without the need to go digging a pit. It could also be used to prepare students or volunteers and give them an idea of how to dig a test pit before going out to do it physically.

Step 1 - The turf is cut and removed. The turf is usually placed upside down for later so it can be relaid once the test pit is filled back in once done.

Step 2 - The topsoil is removed. Any finds discovered in here must be noted in its own separate context.

Step 3 - Context Layer 1 is revealed. Context Layer 1 is excavated until Context Layer 2 is revealed. In any site there may be more contexts or actually less. But we show several here to differentiate the potential different types and soil types. You can usually tell a different Context Layer by noting the soil changing colour.

Step 4 - The same is done until the natural is revealed. The colour of the natural will depend on the local geology of the area. In this case it is orange. The natural is undisturbed earth. Anything above it has potentially been dug out or turned over by humans or animals. Someone could have dug down and the natural covered up over time layer by layer. Or exposed earth could have been layered over in the same way.

Step 5 - The Test Pit is dug. The sides should be straight, flat and vertical which helps during recording. The base should also be as flat as possible. Once this is done you can start recording the details of your test pit. This includes measuring the pit and filling in those many Context Sheets.

Each Context Layer can be removed to reveal the next or left in place and the perspex screen placed over to view the layers in place.

Each Context Layer represents a different soil type. The dark one represents burnt material or charcoal.

Each Context Layer Plate is placed at the top of each context. As you'd be digging down the top of the next layer would of course be revealed first.
