This week we're looking back to March 2026 and the Rosslyn Park National Schools Sevens, where our U14 girls represented West Buckland School.

Showing incredible determination, resilience and team spirit, with half of the squad playing above their age group, the girls rose to the challenge and secured an impressive victory to finish top of their pool. They progressed to the Cup Round of 16, where their remarkable tournament journey came to an end against strong opposition. A fantastic achievement for a team making their WBS debut. 🏉💪🏼

Now, the countdown is on to an exciting summer of girls' rugby with Exeter Chiefs Women preparing to host the first-ever girls-only residential rugby camp at West Buckland School. Taking place from 3–5 August, the camp offers an incredible opportunity for girls to develop their skills, build confidence and learn from some of the very best in players.

🏑 Percy Represents the South West in National Hockey Showcase

Congratulations to Percy F, who was selected to represent the South West as part of the West Panthers Regional Championship Team.

Recently, Percy travelled to Nottingham to compete in the U13 Regional Hockey Festival, where the team enjoyed an outstanding tournament, losing just two matches throughout the competition.

Representing the South West at a regional festival is a fantastic achievement, and the event provided a great opportunity to compete against some of the country's top young hockey players while gaining valuable experience.

🎾End of Term Tennis Report

It has been a highly successful year for tennis at West Buckland, starting with being named Devon Tennis School of the Year and followed by receiving a Highly Commended award from the LTA. This term has seen children from Prep 1 through to Year 13 experience tennis in school, with opportunities to learn, develop and compete throughout the season.

A message from Mr Gill:

"It’s been another enjoyable tennis season at West Buckland this year, with an unprecedented variety of weather conditions.

This term we have had more pupils playing tennis than ever before, with all of our 19 courts being used during Games and ECA lessons. At times, we needed more courts!

We entered six teams in LTA competitions, giving more players the opportunity to play competitive fixtures, with three qualifying through to the regional play-offs.
Our junior, inter and senior teams won all of their friendly matches in our Saturday fixtures.

Tennis doesn’t stop - there is tennis throughout the summer holidays, and from September our tennis squads continue for our all year round players.

Well done to all of our players for their enthusiasm, commitment and sportsmanship throughout the term. Have a fantastic summer, and we look forward to seeing some of you on court over the holidays, and welcoming everyone back in September! 🎾👏

🥉 National Schools Athletics Championships – Bronze Medal!

An incredible achievement for Rumi, who proudly represented the Devon team at the National Schools Athletics Championships in Birmingham.

With a fantastic 1.61m high jump, Rumi secured the bronze medal against the best young athletes in the country.

🏏 Celebrating an Outstanding Achievement for Issie O! 🌟

In a recent Devon Under-18 Girls Cricket match, Issie produced a sensational display of spin bowling. After Somerset had made a steady start and looked well placed, she showcased excellent control and variation, claiming a superb five-wicket haul against a strong batting line-up.

Her landmark fifth wicket was a fitting reward for an exceptional performance, completing a memorable five-for and cementing her place as one of the standout performers of the competition. While the game didn't go their way overall, there was still much to be proud of.

👏 A fantastic individual achievement and a spell to be proud of. Congratulations, Issie!

🏏 End of Term Cricket Round-Up

A few words from Mr Hastie...

Cricket season at West Buckland has come to an end. Throughout the Summer Term, teams from U12 through to U18 competed in a wide range of competitive fixtures across Devon, representing the school with pride and determination.

A particular highlight this year was the continued growth of girls' cricket. Our girls' team completed its first full season, developing tremendously as a group and building a strong foundation for the future. It is fantastic to see so many enthusiastic players eager to return and play again next year.

The U15 boys also enjoyed a memorable season, with an impressive cup run that saw them reach the County Semi-Finals – a tremendous achievement and a reflection of their hard work and commitment throughout the year.

Many of our cricketers will continue playing club cricket over the summer holidays, and we wish them every success as they continue to develop their skills and enjoy the game.

Well done to all of our players for another excellent season of cricket at West Buckland.

🏃‍♂️🏃‍♀️A fantastic athletics season at West Buckland!

🏅Congratulations to all pupils who represented the school in athletics this term. The commitment, teamwork and performances have been outstanding from start to finish.

Miss Rickards' highlights:

⭐ Over 60 pupils represented the school in the North Devon League
⭐ All 8 age group teams qualified for the North Devon League Finals, with our Year 9 Boys and Year 8 Girls crowned champions in their categories
⭐ 21 pupils qualified to represent North Devon at the Devon Schools Championships
⭐ Rumi, Louis, Vaughan, Ash and Gill earned selection for Devon at the South West Schools Championships
⭐ Good luck to Rumi, who is competing at the National Schools Championships this weekend
⭐ A fantastic Sports Day saw every pupil contribute, with school records broken by Vaughan, Indra, Gill, Layla, Rumi and Louis
⭐ 13 pupils proudly represented Team Drake at the IAPS National Athletics Finals at Alexander Stadium
⭐ Special congratulations to Indra, who won gold and bronze medals and was named Female Athlete of the Meet 🥇🥉

We are incredibly proud of every athlete who represented West Buckland this season. The future of athletics at WBS looks bright! 💙💛
