💐 School Flowers Raising Funds for Butterfly Charity
This week, the Charities Committee and West Buckland Environmental Biodiversity Society (WEBS) teamed up with the Prep School Gardening Club to host a cut flower and plant sale.
🌷 All flowers and plants have been grown and cared for in the school garden by both Prep and Senior gardening clubs
🌼 Bunches were arranged by Prep gardeners alongside Year 12 students from WEBS and Charities Committee
🦋 Funds raised support the Butterfly Conservation Devon charity
In the first week alone, students raised an incredible £145!
On Friday, they also delivered 15 bunches of flowers to staff - spreading some extra joy around school 💛

🌱 Inspiring Sustainability Across the Curriculum 🌱
We're delighted to welcome back Phil Williams to our school. Last time he presented to us two Green Apple Awards at the House of Lords for our work in energy reduction and sustainability.
This week, Phil generously shared his expertise with a wide range of year groups (from our Prep pupils right through to Sixth Form) delivering thought-provoking lessons including:
🌍 “Creating Tomorrow Today” with Year 6
🌿 “Sustainability in Business” with Year 10
🌡 “Climate Change” with Year 8
🔬 “The Importance of Scientific Research” with Year 12
A huge thank you to Phil for his time, knowledge, and passion. It was a truly valuable experience for students and staff alike.

🌍 Sustainability in Action: Awards Finalists!
West Buckland School has been shortlisted in the Education Choices Magazine Awards in the Supporting Sustainability category - and we’re especially proud to be sharing this news on World Environment Day 🌱
Sustainability is deeply embedded in life at WBS and shapes both our environment and ethos. From biomass boilers and solar energy to planting over 4,000 trees and cultivating wildflower meadows, our commitment to protecting the natural world is stronger than ever.
Initiatives such as Green Futures Day, food waste reduction programmes, and our first Sustainability Festival showcase how eco-conscious education is woven into everyday school life — empowering students to take action and become responsible global citizens.
We are incredibly proud that this collective effort has been recognised, and what better day to celebrate than today 💚

A fantastic evening at our latest Sixth Form Academic Dinner 🧠
We were delighted to celebrate academic curiosity, thoughtful debate and a real passion for learning across the Sixth Form - also marking Monty’s first event as our new Academic Pillar Prefect 👏
From a deep dive into Hantavirus and global health, to geopolitics in the Sahel, to tackling the concept of infinity - the quality of student-led presentations was exceptional.
A special thank you to Dr McKerrow for a thought-provoking return session, and to Mrs Hamilton for organising such an inspiring event.
📅 Next dinner: 10th June (Years 10–13 welcome, bookings via the parent portal)

🏅 Gold Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Celebration – Continued
We are delighted to share that we have since received another wonderful photo from the Gold Duke of Edinburgh’s Award celebrations at Buckingham Palace, featuring more of our students who were honoured during this special occasion.
A huge congratulations to Henry C, Luke S, Milly L and Ella J, who also received their Gold Awards – an outstanding achievement that reflects dedication, resilience and real commitment.
Seeing so many members of our West Buckland community recognised at such a prestigious event is something we are incredibly proud of.
As always, we aren’t always notified when students attend these ceremonies, so we're grateful to families and students sharing their news and photos with us. If you were at the celebration, or have any upcoming award presentations, we would love to hear from you so we can celebrate your achievements too.
Well done again to everyone involved – a fantastic accomplishment! 👏
