It’s always special to see what teachers take away from their time with SOL. Thank you, Vivien, for sharing your Karlovci story and thank you to TESOL-Hungary for making this connection possible. We loved having you with us!

🌍 Summer memory: A week of learning, sharing & new connections
In August, Vivien Megyeri , a TESOL-Hungary member, had the opportunity to take part in the Summer Retreat in Karlovci, organised by SOL - Sharing One Language .
We’re delighted to share Vivien’s experience of this inspiring week:
“I had a wonderful experience taking part in the SOL course in Serbia and representing TESOL-Hungary. It was a fantastic opportunity to meet teachers from different backgrounds, exchange ideas and share our experiences of language teaching. I came home with new inspiration, lovely memories and some great new connections. I’m very grateful to TESOL-Hungary for giving me the opportunity to be part of such an inspiring week.🥰”

A lovely moment at the Azeta Azerbaijan Conference in Baku: a panel bringing together teachers who joined our Teachers Courses this summer in Devon and Karlovci.

It was a wonderful opportunity for them to share what they took from their time with SOL, talk about their experiences and reflect on how those experiences continue to shape their teaching.

A big thank you to our panellists for sharing their stories so openly and to everyone at AZETA for creating the space for this conversation.

And, of course, thank you to our wonderful trainers Thom Jones, Fiona Mauchline and Teresa Bestwick, whose ideas, energy and expertise made this summer’s courses what they were.

This is exactly what we love about our partnerships: teachers meet, learn from one another, and keep the conversation going long after the course ends.

From partnership to shared opportunities

We are delighted to be in Baku this week for the Azeta Azerbaijan Conference, continuing a partnership that has already brought our two organisations much closer together.

Last year, SOL and AzETA signed our partnership agreement. Since then, 10 AzETA teachers have joined our programmes in Devon and Serbia, experiencing the SOL approach first-hand and taking ideas and inspiration back to their schools.

This year, we are proud to be supporting the conference once again as a sponsor, and we are bringing two SOL opportunities for conference participants to win: a place on a teacher course in Devon and a place at our SOL Summer Retreat in Poland.

And the collaboration continues beyond the conference. Over the next few days, Thom Jones will be visiting schools and universities in Baku to run workshops for teachers and students and introduce more of the opportunities available through SOL.

It is a pleasure to see a partnership develop into something practical, personal and lasting - creating more opportunities for teachers to experience SOL, and for more students to discover where it can take them.

We are very happy to be here and very much looking forward to the days ahead.

The SOL Way.

Meet Debbie. One of the people who makes the SOL experience what it is.

A great guide knows the places, but a great SOL guide knows how to bring those places closer to the students.

Debbie has that wonderful ability to turn a walk into something students want to explore, to notice the things they might otherwise pass by and to ask the kind of questions that make them curious about what they are seeing. She knows when to step in, when to let them discover something for themselves and how to draw even the quieter students into the experience.

Because knowing Devon is one thing. Knowing how to help young people discover it for themselves is something else.

We are very lucky to have Debbie as part of the SOL story.

🌊 A quieter week at SOL… but still plenty of adventure! 💙

As our busy summer season begins to wind down, we’re looking forward to welcoming to North Devon on Sunday a lovely little Open Group from Logos Pirot Serbia accompanied by Gordana Manojlović.

Although it’s a smaller group, they certainly won’t be short of things to see and do! Their week will be filled with some of our favourite North Devon and South West experiences, including Exeter, Lynton & Lynmouth, Clovelly, Appledore & Westward Ho! and Woolacombe & Ilfracombe. 🌍☀️

From dramatic coastlines and sandy beaches to historic towns and little seaside gems, they’ll have plenty of opportunities to explore, experience local life and put their English into practice along the way. They will be making the most of every last minute as their SOL adventure finishes a little earlier as departure is Saturday night! 🌙✨
A big SOL welcome awaits, along with our wonderful host families who will be opening their homes and helping make their stay feel truly special.
Here’s to another week of exploring, learning, laughing and making memories in North Devon. 💙🌊

From the classroom to Devon

Mima Honjek Utmar, an English teacher from Cres, Croatia, has just brought her students to Devon - but their SOL story actually began back at their school.

Their first experience was English in Action, a programme delivered in their own school and supported by SOL through our partnership. SOL contributes towards the cost of the course, giving students the opportunity to work with native English speakers without having to leave Croatia.

That experience sparked their curiosity. They wanted to discover more about the language they were learning, but also about the people, places and culture behind it.

So this week, they are experiencing it for themselves in Devon learning at SOL, meeting local people, exploring the area and seeing just how much more there is to English when you step into the world where it is spoken.

Mima’s group is a great example of how a school partnership can grow: from a classroom experience at home to an unforgettable week in England.

If your school would like to explore a similar pathway through English in Action and SOL, we’d love to hear from you. Get in touch and let’s see what we can create together.

We’re delighted to welcome a new group of students from Romania to SOL this week, brought to Devon for the first time by their teacher, Armanda Stroia.

Their week began with a visit to Windsor, and they have now arrived in Devon, where they are getting to know the SOL team and settling into their programme with interactive introductory lessons at our school.

There’s plenty more to come as they begin exploring Devon, meeting new people and making the most of their time with us.

Welcome to SOL, we’re so glad to have you here!

Our summer programme in Sremski Karlovci has come to an end, and what a week it has been. 28 teachers from 15 countries came together for a programme filled with workshops, conversations, new ideas, cultural experiences and, of course, plenty of time to enjoy each other’s company.

From the first morning to our final evening together, Karlovci gave us a wonderful setting for learning, sharing and making new connections. We hope everyone leaves with something useful for their teaching, something new to take home, and many good memories of their time in Serbia.

Thank you to everyone who made this week so special. We loved having you with us.
Special thanks to our hosts Ekološki Centar Radulovački!

Until next time!
