🍁 Wild Maths at Home Activity: Autumn is coming!

Have your children noticed the first signs that the seasons are changing?

Leaves are starting to fall, conkers are appearing and nature is slowly changing around us. I love this time of the year, when there is a gentle sweep across the trees with burnt orange and yellow colours πŸ‚

Now the perfect time to make the most of the leaves falling.

Give your child a challenge to group the leaves either by:
🍁 Colour
🍁 Deciduous or evergreen
🍁 Individual tree species (I use the Seek app)

Together, you could create a physical bar chart with the leaves to see which is the most common in the area you are.

To finish, together make a beautiful pattern with the fallen leaves on the grass. For an extra challenge, can they make this symmetrical?

Please feel free to share photos of the Wild Maths activities you choose to do, I'd love to see them! Tag Wild Tutoring πŸ€—

I'm really looking forward to restarting sessions with my brilliant learners in just over 1 week's time! If you'd like any info on the group sessions or availability, please feel free to DM me.

🌧️ Rain is coming!

After what feels like months of sunshine and very little rain, I think we might actually be allowed to get excited about it! πŸ˜‚

So, when the rain arrives… we'll be heading outside!

Find the biggest puddle.
Jump in it.
Watch the rain hit the water.
Look for worms coming to the surface.
Listen to how different everything sounds.
See what happens to the leaves, grass and soil when they get wet.

You don't always need to do anything with children outdoors. Sometimes it's enough to put on the wellies and let them splash, explore, get muddy and enjoy being outside. 🌿

And if you're heading out for a rainy woodland walk, don't forget:

β˜” Waterproof coat
πŸ₯Ύ Wellies
🧀 Warm layers
🧦 Spare socks

After such a dry summer, let's make the most of the rain while it's here. πŸŒ§οΈπŸ’š

🌿 5 questions to ask your child on a nature walk

You don't need a lesson plan, a worksheet or a learning objective. Sometimes, all you need is a walk and a few good questions.

Next time you're outside, try asking:

πŸ‘€ What can you notice?
πŸ€” What do you wonder?
πŸ‘‚ What can you hear that we couldn't hear at home?
πŸ’ I wonder what is happening here?
☁️ Why are there clouds in the sky?

Nature gives us so many opportunities to notice, wonder, question and explore.

Sometimes the simplest walks can lead to the richest learning. 🌿

Please share your own ideas πŸ‘‡πŸ»

🌿 Could Wild Tutoring be a good fit for your child?

Wild Tutoring is small-group Literacy and maths tutoring for home-educated children, taking place outdoors in local parks and woodland.

The sessions are practical, hands-on and adapted to the children attending, with plenty of movement, exploration and opportunities to learn in different ways.

There are currently just a few spaces remaining:

🌳 South Molton Community Woodland - Tuesdays
πŸ“– Wild Literacy, 9.30–10.30am - 2 spaces
πŸ”’ Wild Maths, 10.40–11.40am - 2 spaces

🌿 Rock Park, Barnstaple -Thursdays
πŸ“– Wild Literacy - fully booked
πŸ”’ Wild Maths, 10.40–11.40am - 1 space

Groups are kept small, with a maximum of 6 children.

And if you're interested but not quite sure whether your child will enjoy a group session, you don't have to commit to the whole block straight away. If there is space, you can book an individual session first and see how your child gets on.

If you'd like to find out more, take a look at the booking information via linktr.ee/wildtutoring, or send me a message. 🌿

Ever wondered why a child who struggles to sit at a desk for 10 minutes can focus for an hour outdoors?

Their nervous system regulation plays a big part:

🌿 Cortisol Drop: Research shows spending time in natural environments lowers stress hormones almost immediately. A calm brain is a brain ready to absorb new concepts.

🌿 Proprioceptive Input: Walking on uneven terrain, balancing on logs, and handling natural objects feeds the body's need for physical movement without it feeling like fidgeting.

🌿 Contextual Memory: Learning about fractions by dividing pine cones or geometry through stick angles creates vivid, multi-sensory memory anchors.

When teaching outdoors, I notice a big difference in how focussed a child can be. They hone in on the fascination of springy, soft moss or the sound of twittering birds. The curious wonder of the world around them.

β€‹πŸ‘‡ Do you notice a mood shift in your family when you step outside? πŸ’›

β˜€οΈ ECLIPSE ALERT! Turn tonight into a mini nature lesson! πŸŒ‘
Head outside between now and 8pm to spot tiny crescent-shaped sun shadows cast under leafy trees! πŸƒβœ¨

We are having so much fun already!

Real-time science out in nature... nature really is the ultimate classroom! 🌿
