Barnsley Youth Jazz Association

Barnsley Youth Jazz Association The Barnsley Youth Jazz Association is a not for profit music service based in Barnsley, South Yorkshire.

We teach young people to play instruments and run a number of bands every week. The Barnsley Youth Jazz Association (BYJA) aims to provide individual music tuition and performing experience through the Barnsley Youth Jazz Orchestra and the Barnsley Youth Swing Band for children aged 5-18 years at an affordable price. We offer a very good value for money system using excellent, enthusiastic teachers and good quality instruments. We are confident that our services are difficult to beat locally. BYJA loans pupils instruments, provides tuition at a significantly discounted rate and actively encourages it's members to achieve formally recognised music qualifications whilst having fun along the way. When your child’s teacher believes that they have made sufficient progress all musicians will be invited and encouraged to play in one or more of our bands at no extra cost. Playing together is an important aspect of music, pupils’ progress quicker, make new friends and most importantly find learning fun. We currently run 3 groups the Barnsley Youth Swing Band for our beginner musicians, the Barnsley Youth Jazz Orchestra for intermediate level musicians and the Dearne Big Band & Singers for our advanced musicians aged 18 and above. We regularly hold concerts at local venues to give children the opportunity to perform on a regular basis. The Dearne Big Band & Singers is the primary fundraiser for the Barnsley Youth Jazz Association.

Barnsley Youth Jazz Orchestra is reflecting on a fantastic 2026 Cornwall tour, with all musicians and instruments safely home. They wowed audiences at Looe RNLI and the Boringdon Arms, battling coastal winds with true big band spirit. Go karting, kayaking, and beach antics kept the team laughing between concerts. Glorious weather, swinging music, and nonstop fun… Jazz Orch you were brilliant!

A perfect summer evening, a sea breeze drifting across the sun drenched terrace, and Barnsley Youth Jazz Orchestra filling the Boringdon Arms in Plymouth with music that seemed to stop time for a moment.😎

As the band found its stride, the energy shifted, feet started tapping, heads began nodding, and before long the audience was on its feet dancing the evening away.

It was one of those rare evenings where everything comes together; great music, a beautiful setting, and a crowd that didn’t want it to end. A truly memorable night for the band and everyone lucky enough to be there.🎷🎺🎹

Barnsley Youth Jazz Orchestra brought the heat and the cool to Looe, raising a fantastic £188.30 for the RNLI while holidaymakers soaked up the sunshine and some seriously smooth tunes.

Despite temperatures that could melt a trombone slide, the band played brilliantly, and the half‑time ice creams were the heroic refreshment they deserved. Even more impressively, not a single ice cream was lost to seagull piracy, which surely counts as a minor miracle on a British beach.

Huge thanks to the RNLI Looe Lifeboat Station, East Looe Town Trust and everyone who stopped by, tapped their feet, and supported the Looe RNLI. Cornwall, you were great. 🎷☀️🕶️
