🎺 GRIMETHORPE NORTH OF ENGLAND YOUTH BAND - NEW CONDUCTOR

We’re really pleased to announce that Lewis Bettles will be taking on the role of conductor of the Grimethorpe North of England Youth Band.

Many will know Lewis as the Solo Trombone of Grimethorpe Colliery Band, but he brings a wealth of musical experience outside brass bands.

Lewis has performed with ensembles including The Hallé, Scottish Chamber Orchestra, Scottish Opera, Royal Northern Sinfonia and Manchester Camerata, as well as performing internationally at venues including the Musikverein in Vienna and the BBC Proms in Japan.

He’s also an experienced conductor and teacher, and currently works as Talent Development Manager at Opera North, where he leads the organisation’s youth programmes.

We’re excited to see what Lewis brings to our Youth Band!

📣 OPEN TO NEW PLAYERS

The Grimethorpe North of England Youth Band brings together young brass and percussion players from across the North of England, the Midlands and further afield.

We’re open to players aged 18 and under, Grade 5+ standard or equivalent, and we’re looking for players across all sections.

As a member, you’ll get the chance to:

🎺 Rehearse regularly at Grimethorpe band room
🎶 Work with Lewis and players from Grimethorpe Colliery Band
🥁 Take part in concerts and workshops
🎼 Play alongside Grimethorpe Colliery Band in concerts
🤝 Meet and play with other young musicians
🚍 Take part in trips and other musical opportunities

The band rehearses monthly, so you can continue playing with your own band, school or ensemble alongside the Youth Band.

If you’re a young brass or percussion player looking for something a bit different and want to play with some great musicians, we’d love to hear from you.

📢 Save the Date 📅 Applications for our next round of large grant applications open on MONDAY 5th OCTOBER 2026. And don't forget - you can apply from the whole of South Yorkshire 🙌 🙌

Our large grants (up to £2000) are designed for new project ideas or existing projects seeking further funding, but we can only offer a limited number each year.

Need a smaller boost? Our small grants (up to £750) are available year-round on a rolling basis.

Before applying, take a moment to consider which grant best fits your needs.....

Who can apply?

The Sarah Nulty Power of Music Foundation supports individuals and organisations in South Yorkshire who use music to improve people's lives. We recognise the huge impact music can have on physical and mental wellbeing and support people who share our vision.

We believe that experiencing the power of music shouldn’t be limited by a lack of money or access, so our grants go to support people experiencing hardship and organisations supporting people across the region.

We can only support applications which have music at their heart, and where the people who will benefit from the support are based within South Yorkshire.

Get ready to apply and find out more here: thesarahnultypowerofmusicfoundation.co.uk/our-grants 🎶

Huge thanks to our supporters and grant partners, your support means so much to us. Together, we are continuing Sarah's legacy and helping music create connections, opportunities and lasting positive impact in communities across Sheffield, Barnsley, Rotherham, Doncaster and beyond:
