Grimethorpe Education - Grimethorpe Colliery Band Grimethorpe Colliery Band are offering the chance for Young Brass and Percussion players of all levels and experience to take part in a Full Day Workshop with members of the band on Saturday 28th September.

Unfortunately, due to various documented issues, we have had to postpone the youth band day on the 18th May until September 28th. We will be running one a term next school year, and look forward to welcoming as many children and young people as we have with our recent courses. We’ll announce the new date in good time, and will also open the sign up from mid/late August

However, we are looking to recruit across the band in our brilliant North of England Youth Band, so please do get in touch if your young people are of around grade 6 and above. We’ve monthly rehearsals starting in September (and a couple to go still this year) and some exciting plans to announce.

On Saturday our brilliant North of England Youth Band are getting the once in a lifetime opportunity to work with international trumpet star Rex Richardson who we’ll be welcoming to the band room for a workshop. Kindly supported by the amazing people down at Yamaha Music Europe UK

One of our projects taking its first step in performing. Will be a great evening.

We are abolsutely delighted to share the news of our first concert, at least in 8 decades or so. We’ve chosen to play at Wesley Hall, Crookes on Saturday 20tb April. Appearing at the concert will be our training band Brassworks Sheffield, and Grimethorpe Colliery Band Principal Cornet Jamie Smith will be our guest soloist.

We’ve had amazing support from the people of Crookes and Walkley for our project, and we’d love to see as many people as possible come along to our first concert. Don’t forget we’re a welcoming social band with very little in the way of commitment. We meet at St Mary’s in Walkley on Wednesdays 6-7 for our training band for beginners and improving adults and children, and then the main band is 7.30-9.15 for players of any standard and experience regardless of how long it is since they last played, on both brass and percussion. We're really pleased to share with you our brand new logo for Crookes Brass Band! A big thank you to Simon Evans for the design and our players for your thoughts and ideas.

Supported by Grimethorpe Colliery Band and Education, our community band is open to everyone regardless of age and ability. If you want to play but can't find the time, are looking to learn, or put down your instrument a few years ago, we'd love for you to come along and play.

We're based at St Mary's Church in Walkley with a junior/beginners band running from 6-7 and a main band running from 7.30-9.15. For more details email [email protected]

Our Grimethorpe North of England Youth Band performed at the prestigious Festival of Brass at the RNCM - Royal Northern College of Music last Sunday

It was an incredible performance and experience for our young players and they very much enjoyed the aspirational setting of the RNCM and watching the college band perform.

Grimethorpe Youth Band provided an excellent concert at the RNCM festival of brass, showing the potential of young musicians who are actively being pushed throughout musical education.

Their first piece was “Prelude for an Occasion” by Edward Gregson, and throughout, we were shown the capability of this band. With a driving timp start, the band created a really good full band sound, with solos throughout.

Next was “Ballade No 2”, with Grimethorpe Colliery Band principal cornet, Mercer & Barker Ltd artist Jamie Smith. With impressive range from the soloist, and good phrasing and passion, the band accompany well, with some good soprano features as well! Well done.

“A Grimethorpe Adventure” showed off some good soprano moments through all the movements played, and good work from the basses. Percussion were persistent with this one, and the last movement there was excellent technique from the hi-hat part, and lots of good flugel features throughout as well.

“Whirlwind” features the band principal euphonium, and at just 17 he delivered a fab performance from memory as well in such a great venue with a busy audience! Time and range was great and there were some really nice moments in this, well done Robin!

“In Celebration” had some stand out moments from the trombones and the horns, and again, a talented percussion team held the band together well, and this was an enjoyed performance by band and audience.

“Airbourne” was an energetic start as the winning composition from the Grimethorpe composition competition, and this piece was very enjoyable to listen to, with some great work from front and back row throughout.

The band’s encore was “September”, an adaptation of the hit song by Earth, Wind and Fire, and the euphs and baris sung out the main theme, whilst cornets sat on top well. This was a really good performance!

We’ve got one of our free youth workshop days happening on Saturday February 3rd at Barnsley Civic 9.30-3.30

It’s open to brass band percussion players of all levels from just a few notes to grade 8 and beyond.

What a night a few days ago, when two of our brilliant bands, Grimethorpe Junior Brass and the Grimethorpe North of England Youth Band both played in a sold out St Lukes Church Grimethorpe with the main Grimethorpe Colliery Band

Both bands played brilliantly and it was a wonderful evening. Out junior bsnd is for beginners and improving players old and young and meets on a Thursday in the Acorn Centre, whilst our North of England is a collection of some of the best players in our organisation and beyond - some of the players come from as far as Suffolk and Birmingham, who meet to play challenging music once or twice a month.
