This week a group of Year 8 students were lucky enough to be invited to the Brooklands Innovation Academy who aim to inspire and support young people to become the next generation of scientists and engineers.

Brooklands Innovation Academy is a thriving hub that connects young people aged 11-18 with scientists, technologists, engineers and mathematicians from leading businesses.

Our Students were fortunate enough to hear from some inspiring speakers such as Dr Nash Vracas - Programme Manager for Aston Martin and Dr Simon Singh a popular science author and theoretical and particle physicist. They took part in activities with Axiom Maths, learnt to make Lego robots with Accenture UKI and worked collaboratively to build giant tetrahedrons with BAM UK & I. They all really enjoyed the opportunity to board His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said, Sultan of Oman's private plane and the opportunity to visit the cockpit and learn that there were over 1500 buttons and controls! Some of them even got to pilot the plane!
A fantastic opportunity for the students and a day to be remembered. I was really proud of the way all students conducted themselves throughout the day - They were great representatives of our school. Mrs S Stone, DYL Yr 8

The Beacon School had it's Careers Fair yesterday where students were given the opportunity to engage with, speak to and ask questions to a range of employers, colleges, sixth forms and future settings. These employers, companies and educational settings covered a wide variety of fields including engineering, banking, health care, trades, hairdressing and barbering, healthcare and emergency services. We were fortunate enough as a school to welcome a range of names including the NHS, the RAF, the Army, the Police, Barclays Bank, AtkinsRealis, Sutton United, the Civil Service and Gatwick Airport. The students were a huge credit to yourselves as parents/carers and us as a school as they were positively engaged, asked lots of questions, were confident and resilient with many going out of their comfort zones and reaping the benefits of this opportunity.
