Rising Mathematician Festival at the University of Southampton
On June 9, 2026, a group of Year 7 students attended the Axiom Maths Rising Mathematician Festival at the University of Southampton. The event brought together enthusiastic and high-achieving young mathematicians for a day of learning, exploration, and fun.
The visit began with a guided tour of the university, where students discovered interesting facts and learned about its history. During the tour, they also took part in a lively question-and-answer session, sharing and discussing a range of fascinating mathematical facts.
Following the tour, the students attended an engaging lecture in one of the university’s lecture halls. Here, they explored how to calculate the Earth’s gravitational pull in relation to distance, gaining insight into real-world applications of mathematics. They were also introduced to the origins of black holes and the mathematics that helps scientists understand these mysterious phenomena.
Later in the day, students participated in a large “Math Circle,” where they collaborated and competed with peers from other schools to solve challenging mathematical problems. This activity encouraged teamwork, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills.
Overall, the students found the day both entertaining and inspiring. The festival not only challenged them intellectually but also helped deepen their appreciation for mathematics.
