The Bangor Brain and Cognitive Development Lab had an enjoyable morning giving a talk at University of the Third Age, Bangor. We discussed our current research projects and invited members to take part. We had lots of interesting questions about our use of the EEG technique too!

We are starting data collection for an exciting new study! We are focusing on how language can shape cognition in the older adult population.
Today we spent time in the lab going over our experiment with new team members.
We are seeking participants aged between 65-85 who speaking one, or more languages fluently to participate in our EEG study. If you are interested, then contact us for more information!

Oeddech chi'n gwybod nad yw siarad yn Gymraeg i'ch plant yn effeithio faint o eiriau Saesneg maent yn gwybod? Mae plant rhwng 10 a 30 mis oed sy'n clywed Cymraeg a Saesneg yn gwybod yr un faint o eiriau yn Saesneg, a phlant sy'n clywed dim ond Saesneg. Felly maent yn gwybod mwy o eiriau na phlant sy’n clywed Saesneg yn unig, pan fyddwch yn ystyried eu geiriau Cymraeg hefyd! Rheswm da i siarad mwy o Gymraeg â'ch plant yn y cartref!
Wythnos diwethaf, roedd ein myfyriwr PhD Elena Neophytou yn IASCL, cynhadledd am ddatblygiad iaith plant. Cyflwynodd ei phoster ar ddatblygiad geirfa mewn plant dwyieithog yn Gymraeg a Saesneg.
Os ydych eisiau ein helpu i ehangu’r ymchwil yma, a chyfrannu at ddatblygiad graddfa gyfartalog o ddatblygiad geirfa Cymraeg a Saesneg, plîs cysylltwch gyda ni i gymryd rhan mewn astudiaeth geirfa ar-lein: [email protected]
Hefyd, byddem ar stondin Seicoleg yn y Babell Wyddoniaeth yn Eisteddfod Genedlaethol Ynys Môn ar ddydd Mercher, Awst 9fed. Dewch draw i ddweud helo!

Did you know that speaking Welsh to your child does not affect the amount of English words that they know? Children between 10 and 30 months that hear Welsh and English know the same amount of words in Engilsh, as children who hear only English. So they know more words than children who only hear English, when you also consider their Welsh words! A good reason to speak more Welsh to your child in the home!
Last week, our PhD student Elena Neophytou was at IASCL, a conference about child language development. She presented her poster on vocabulary development in bilingual Welsh and English children.
If you want to help us expand this research, and contribute to the development of an average scale for Welsh/English vocabulary development, please get in touch to take part in our online vocabulary study: [email protected]
Also, we will be on the Psychology stall in the Science Tent at the Anglesey National Eisteddfod on Wednesday the 9th of August. Come say hello!

A new study shows that by 11 months babies' brains are already specialised in processing the language(s) present in their environments. Interestingly this study also shows differences in brain activation between bilingual and monolingual babies when they are listening to sounds from two languages. The bilingual babies showed more activation in areas associated with executive function and switching between the two languages!

Rydym yn recriwtio ar gyfer astudiaeth newydd yn y labordy!
Mae Labordy Datblygiad Ymenyddol a Gwybyddol Bangor yn astudio sut mae defnyddio un neu ddwy iaith yn llunio gweithgarwch yr ymennydd yn ystod ei oes. Yn yr astudiaeth hon mae gennym ddiddordeb arbennig mewn pobl rhwng 65 ac 85 oed. Bydd y cyfranogwyr yn chwarae gêm gyfrifiadurol tra byddwn ni yn cofnodi gweithgarwch eu hymennydd. Gofynnir iddynt wasgu botwm pan fo goffer brown yn neidio allan o'r twll. Byddwn yn mesur gweithgarwch yr ymennydd yn defnyddio cap ac ynddo synwyryddion arbennig. Bydd ychydig bach o gel (megis gel sgan uwchsain) yn cael ei roi yn y cap dros bob synhwyrydd. Gofynnir i'r rhai sy'n cymryd rhan gyrraedd â gwalltiau glân a sych gan y bydd hyn o gymorth i gael signal clir. Hefyd byddwn yn gofyn i'r cyfranogwyr lenwi holiadur am eu cefndir.
Cedwir eich enw ac unrhyw wybodaeth bersonol yn hollol gyfrinachol ac ni fydd gwybodaeth o'r fath yn cael ei gynnwys yn unrhyw gyhoeddiad. Mae gennych hefyd yr hawl i dynnu’n ôl o’r arbrawf ar unrhyw adeg yn ystod y dasg, yn ogystal â'r hawl i dynnu eich data o'r arbrawf. Mae'r astudiaeth yn para rhwng awr a dwy awr. Bydd y cyfranogwyr yn cael £15 i'w digolledu am eu hamser a'u costau teithio.
Bydd cyfleusterau ar gael i chi olchi eich gwallt ar ôl y prawf os hoffech wneud hynny.
Meini prawf 65-80 oed - llaw dde, gwelediad normal neu wedi ei gywiro i normal, dim anhwylderau niwrolegol
Meini prawf gwaharddol - dallineb lliw, anhwylderau niwrolegol, plât metel yn y penglog, mewnblaniadau yn y cochlea (mae teclynnau clyw yn iawn os gallwn eu diffodd yn ystod y prawf), pobl llaw chwith.
I gael rhagor o wybodaeth neu i drefnu apwyntiad, cysylltwch ag: Elena Neophytou,[email protected]

We’re recruiting for a new study in the lab!
The Bangor Brain and Cognitive Development Lab is studying how using one or two languages shapes brain activity across the lifespan. In this study we are particularly interested in people between 65 - 85 years of age. Participants will play a computer game while we record their brain activity. They will be asked to press a button when a brown gopher pops out of the gopher hole. We measure brain activity using a cap with special sensors. A small amount of gel (like ultrasound gel) will be inserted into the cap at each sensor. Participants will be asked to arrive with clean and dry hair as this will help us get a clear signal. We will also ask participants to fill out a background questionnaire.
Your name and any personal information will be kept in full confidence and will not be associated with any publication. You also have the right to withdraw from the experiment at any time during the task, as well as the right to withdraw your data from the experiment. The study takes between one and two hours. Participants will be given £15 to compensate them for their time and travel.
Facilities will be available for you to wash your hair after testing if you would like to do so.
Criteria 65-80 years of age -right handed, normal or corrected to normal vision, no neurological disorders
Exclusionary criteria - colour blindness, neurological disorder, metal plate in skull, cochlear implants (hearing aid is ok if we can turn it off during testing), left handed.
For further information, or to arrange an appointment, please contact: Elena Neophytou, [email protected]
