Lets be honest, clinical simulation scenarios can be daunting. Even more so for health care professionals who are naturally more reserved or softly spoken. But theory builds competence and practice builds confidence.

Meet Jim (pictured, with forehead post-it note insitu 😆) - he is my "all rounder" sim manikin. From NGT to catheters, he is the star of the show for all of these clinical skills.

But, notice what I did there ⬆️

I have "humanised" my manikin to make it more natural while interacting with what is essentially, an inanimate object (eye contact etc).

I suggest you do the same to help you demonstrate your safest and best clinical self on your OSCE day.

You likely won't have a sim manikin, so use a pillow, teddy...anything.

And practice, practice, practice, take regular breaks 👀, eat and drink, look after yourself, then practice some more!

In areas like Test of competence/OSCE preparation, this matters now, more than ever.

Many of the nurses (and midwives) engaging with these services are navigating complex decisions.

• Professional registration, relocation, finances, and career progression - often all at once.

Clear, balanced and factual information provided by qualified and experienced professionals is essential to support informed decision-making.

In practice, I have observed some recurring approaches within the broader context that may inadvertently lead to confusion.

For example:

• Language around guaranteed outcomes in an externally assessed, competence-based exam (NMC CBT/OSCE)
• Simplified and/or unrealistic messaging around UK NMC registration pathways
• Use of terms that may imply endorsement by or alignment with, NMC
• Limited or confusing detail around what is included, or what isn’t
• Time-sensitive offers or messaging that can create urgency

None of these are necessarily intended to mislead.

But how information is framed - what’s emphasised, and what may be less visible, can shape expectations in significant ways.

That impact is real... very real.

I know this because I have had many nurses contact me at the point where their expectations and reality no longer align.

This is sometimes after their precious time, energy, and resources have already been invested.

This is not about criticism but more about maintaining professional standards and supporting better understanding for colleagues.

This is why I keep things simple and transparent:

• Clear scope of support and accountability
• Honest communication about what I can and cannot offer
• Space for individuals to make informed, professionally autonomous decisions without pressure

Because in professional education and other related services (especially where regulation, migration, and financial risk intersect), clarity and integrity isn’t just helpful - they actually part of our responsibility and accountability.

Guaranteed NMC OSCE pass?❎I can't promise this and neither can anyone else - please let me tell you why.

As an experienced nurse educator specialising in NMC registration and OSCE preparation I get asked a lot: "𝘊𝘢𝘯 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘨𝘶𝘢𝘳𝘢𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘦 𝘢𝘯 𝘖𝘚𝘊𝘌 𝘱𝘢𝘴𝘴?"

I have observed other training providers advertising guaranteed OSCE passes and have been asked by organisations to guarantee a pass for referred candidates, so it's fair to address this point transparently.

My honest answer to this question will always be:

Why? Because OSCE success depends on factors the candidate controls: existing knowledge, work ethic, diligence, practice, and life commitments plus much more.

I complete a consultation call with each nurse before booking to ensure I can provide the right support for their needs. If a nurse isn't yet "OSCE ready", then I will advise accordingly, at no cost to them.

Factors determined by NMC.
NMC test of competence (part 2 OSCE) is impartially and externally examined by NMC registered nurse examiners and standardised across 4 NMC competence test centres (CTCs).

Amongst other aspects, candidates must demonstrate safe practice and clear, compassionate communication to succeed on the day.

❎️ Between October - December 2025 20% of OSCE candidates 𝘥𝘪𝘥𝘯'𝘵 pass after 3 attempts. This is the reality.
