Dear All,
Those of you considering applying to this course for the 2020-2021 session should be aware that the course starts in October. You should therefore apply by the end of June 2020 at the latest, as formalities - visa, finance, accomodation, University administration etc takes a long time. Last year I was receiving fresh applications 3 weeks before the course was due to start!
All the best,
Anil

A high-density genetic map and molecular sex-typing assay for gerbils 11/04/2019

Research work done by Sushmita Supriya ( 2017 - 2018 MSc student) has just been published!!

A high-density genetic map and molecular sex-typing assay for gerbils We constructed a high-density genetic map for Mongolian gerbils ( Meriones unguiculatus). We genotyped 137 F2 individuals with a genotype-by-sequencing (GBS) approach at over 10,000 loci and built...

Comments from the external examiner on the MSc degree:

The programme provides a required set of taught modules that include content across a wide range of this subject area. This provides theoretical and practical knowledge of molecular biology technologies applied to microbial, plant, fish, environmental and human situations in both basic biology and biotechnology. As a result students can gain an excellent breadth of appreciation of the uses and potential within the subject.

I was very impressed with the practical components in the programme. All taught modules contained an appropriate practical exercise, in addition to one module that consisted entirely of practical work. Each student also performed a substantial individual research project. The range of topics for the research projects was excellent and the best students showed considerable ownership and thought. Students can thus gain a substantial amount of laboratory and bioinformatic experience during their studies.
This is more than in some similar M. Sc. programmes with which I am familiar, making it a good course for those with a scientific background who want to move into this subject area as well as biologists who want to deepen their experience of molecular biology prior to seeking employment or further advanced study.

Salmon given GM feed to boost nutrition 08/08/2018

Levels of omega 3 oils have decreased by half in farmed salmon. Plants have been engineered to synthesise the omega 3 oil and are been fed to salmon in a trioal to see if omega3 levels in the farmed salmon increase:

Salmon given GM feed to boost nutrition Researchers are feeding genetically modified crops to farmed salmon to see if it boosts their nutritional value.

Recycling hope for plastic-hungry enzyme 17/04/2018

Recent research has identified bacteria which are able to degrade plastic - this may be a way of combating plastic pollution:

Recycling hope for plastic-hungry enzyme Science created a 'wonder material' in plastic; now nature is helping to unmake it.
