Why do composite restorations fail? ❌🦷

Composite restorations primarily fail due to recurrent decay (secondary caries), restoration fracture, and adhesive bond degradation. These failures are heavily influenced by technique-sensitive factors such as moisture contamination, polymerisation shrinkage, stress, and improper curing, rather than the composite material itself.

Other causes, especially those via Patient related factors include; Poor oral hygiene by use of high-sugar diets and bruxism that places excessive mechanical stress on composites.

Meet Dr Amin Aminian
BDS MSc MFDS MRD FDS FCGDent

Amin is a highly experienced Specialist Prosthodontist with over 30 years in restorative and aesthetic dentistry. Following graduation from Liverpool University, he completed advanced specialist training in prosthodontics, earning an MSc from the University of Manchester alongside memberships and fellowships from the Royal Colleges of Surgeons in Glasgow and Edinburgh.

Known for his patient-first philosophy, Dr Aminian combines clinical excellence with a calm, personalised approach, focusing on long-term oral health, function, comfort, and natural aesthetics. He accepts referrals for complex restorative, tooth wear, implant, and prosthodontic cases across the UK, with a reputation for delivering tailored care to the highest professional standards.

Meet James Darcey
BDS, MSc (OMFS), MDPH, MFGDP RCSEng, MEndo
RCSEd, FDS (Rest Dent) RCSEd

Providing a 2-day programme on Endodontics as part of the NWRI course(s) from September onwards.

Specialist in Endodontics and Consultant and Honorary Senior Lecturer in Restorative Dentistry.

James’s time is split between his role as a Consultant in the Dental Hospital and as a specialist at Clinic 334. In his consultant role, his focus is on the management of dental trauma from urgent care through to the provision of complex endodontic complications and replacement of missing teeth. In practice he offers both specialist Endodontic and Restorative services with a particular love of apical surgery.

James is the author of several publications and lecturers on many aspects of restorative dentistry and endodontic treatment both locally and nationally.
