The Welsh Government has released findings from 'The Literacy Expert Panel'. This document is intended to guide reading instruction across Wales. We welcome the emphasis on phonological awareness, which can be overlooked when we move on to teach phonics. Also, the recognition that strong oral language skills are integrated with the development of reading and writing skills. It's short and clear, and is expected to guide the teaching of reading in the classroom.

Mae Llywodraeth Cymru wedi cyhoeddi canfyddiadau gan 'Panel Arbenigol Llythrennedd'. Bwriad y ddogfen hon yw arwain addysgu darllen ledled Cymru. Rydym yn croesawu'r pwyslais ar ymwybyddiaeth ffonolegol, y gellir ei anwybyddu pan fyddwn yn symud ymlaen i addysgu ffoneg. Hefyd, y gydnabyddiaeth bod sgiliau iaith lafar cryf wedi'u hintegreiddio â datblygiad sgiliau darllen ac ysgrifennu. Mae'n fyr ac yn glir, a disgwylir iddo arwain addysgu darllen yn yr ystafell ddosbarth.

Dolen yn y sylwadau.

Amazing to be part of the project with such great researchers. This is going to be a game changer for the teaching of reading in Wales.

Bangor University has secured an £8 million Welsh Government grant to establish
CAL:ON Cymru (Centre for the Advancement of Literacy: research-led Outcomes
and Nation-wide change).

Manon Jones, Professor of Psychology, will lead CAL:ON Cymru which incorporates
several projects headed by a team of literacy experts from University of York,
Swansea University, UCL, and OxEd & Assessment.

Manon said, “We are absolutely delighted to be working on improving literacy in
Wales. Our aim is for Wales to become an international example of excellence in
bilingual education.”
