Bangor RNLI complete multi-agency training exercise On Monday evening there was a flurry of activity on Belfast Lough when volunteer crews from Bangor, Donaghadee and Portaferrry RNLI came together with members of Royal North of Ireland Yacht Club, Ballyholme Yacht Club and Lagan Search and Rescue for a planned training exercise.

During Saturday's naming ceremony for Bangor RNLI's new lifeboat, we were reminded of one rescue she had already been involved in which resulted in the life of a lone sailor being saved.

Bangor crew had been paged on the evening of 9th September 2024 after a member of Ballyholme Yacht Club raised the alarm when a dinghy sailor had failed to return to the yacht club.

For almost an hour, the lifeboat crew searched using white pyrotechnic flares to illuminate the area before a lifeboat crew member heard the faint call for help which led to the successful location of the visibly shaken casualty who was swiftly brought onboard and returned to the safety of shore.

Helm on that call out was Russell McGovern who volunteers at both Bangor and Portaferry lifeboat stations and we were delighted to be in Bangor on Saturday to see him awarded with a Lifesaving Operations Director Commendation for his excellent leadership, seamanship, and teamwork which had resulted in one life being saved.

We offer our congratulations to the other members of lifeboat crew present that evening who also received awards.
