STOP telling your kids to "just add a zero" when multiplying by 10, 100, or 1,000! 🧠✨

It’s easy to give children shortcuts, but tricks often create confusion later on—especially when they start working with decimals!

In our sessions, we focus on understanding the concept first:

👉 Digits Shift Left: When we multiply by 10, every digit moves one column to the left because its value becomes 10 times bigger.
👉 Physical Manipulatives: By physically sliding counters across a place value grid (from Ones to Tens, Hundreds, Thousands, and beyond!), students visually grasp scale and position.
👉 Zeros are Placeholders: We only fill empty columns with zeros to hold the place value after the digits have moved.

When children understand why a math rule works, they build confidence that carries them all the way through secondary school and beyond! 📚

💬 How was multiplying by 10 taught when you were at school? Let us know in the comments!

"Dyslexia isn't a measure of intelligence; it's a unique way of processing the world." 📚💡

We love seeing features like this that celebrate dyslexic strengths. From incredible storytelling to brilliant problem-solving, neurodiverse minds bring so much creativity to the table.

As educators, we are passionate about supporting and unlocking that potential in every student. 🌟

Unlock a child's potential with the right scaffolding, and the results speak for themselves! ✨

Look at this incredible extended piece of writing! This student has worked incredibly hard to retell the story of Hansel and Gretel, demonstrating amazing perseverance and creativity.

Progress like this doesn't happen by accident, or by simply copying text from a whiteboard. It’s built on a foundation of targeted support.

When we give children the right scaffolds, we lift the barriers to writing and let their true potential shine through. So incredibly proud of this superstar! 🎒✏️

Phonics detectives at work!

Our learners have been exploring the different ways the long /a/ sound can be represented in words. By hunting for ai, ay and a-e spellings in sentences, they're strengthening their phonics knowledge and building confidence as readers.

It's wonderful to see children applying their learning independently and spotting patterns in real texts!

Is your child stuck on counting? 🧩✨

"They can count to 10, but they get totally stuck at 29, 39, or 49!"

If this sounds familiar, you aren't alone. Many children can easily memorise the sequence of numbers by rote. But for children with dyslexia, dyscalculia, or working memory difficulties, relying on memory alone isn't enough. No matter how many times you feel you've practised, they hit a wall at the "bridging" points—what happens right after a number ending in 9.
At TforTeacher, we change the game by focusing on understanding rather than memorising. Here is how we do it:

⭐ 1. Teach the concept, not the rule: We break counting into tiny steps and explicitly teach the "bridge" to the next 10. We use whiteboard practice paired with fun, chanted chorus scripts like "After the tens come the twenties!" to build a rhythm they can lean on.

⭐ 2. Use a multisensory approach: When children can visualise the maths, they can remember it! We use physical Base 10 apparatus (tens and ones) so they can literally feel and see the numbers grow. If we have 9 individual ones and want to keep counting, we run out of blocks! We have to reach for a 10 rod. Doing this physically over and over builds a permanent mental image of how numbers change.

⭐ 3. Map out the patterns: We love making our own 99-squares with our students! Building it from scratch highlights the patterns and explicitly flags the number 9 as a visual "cue" or hook that tells the learner: Change is coming, time for the next 10!

🚀 Our Top Tip: Don't stop at 100! Even though school curriculums in the early years look mostly at numbers up to 100, stopping right there can make children think 100 is the biggest number in the world. Show them a glimpse of what lies beyond to keep their maths horizons wide open!

A little sunshine, a good story and some brilliant word choices 🌳📖

We focused on listening carefully to the sounds in the story and capturing them through onomatopoeia.

It’s always amazing to see how quickly confidence grows when children are given the space to think and explore language in a different way.
