Wash your hands

Coming into the winter months hand hygiene along with respiratory hygiene is the most important method of preventing and controlling the spread of infections.

In particular parents should:

โ€ข Encourage children to wash hands regularly with soap and water;
โ€ข Make sure your child carries tissues at all times;
โ€ข Teach children to cover their nose and mouth when coughing or sneezing and to use a tissue which is disposed of quickly and carefully in a bin.

As parents we always worry about our children.

The recent media coverage and news of Streptococcus A and Scarlet Fever, has understandably caused a lot of concern amongst parents/guardians and/or care givers.

We hope this NHS resource entitled โ€˜When Should I Worry?โ€™ is helpful and reassuring.

Do you have a child who's unwell and are wondering if they should be in nursery or school?

Check out this handy guide to find out when they should stay off, and when they can go back if they are well enough to do so.

Symptoms and severity of illness will vary from person to person. If your child is unwell and you have concerns about their symptoms you should speak to your GP.

The PHA is calling on parents of pre-school children to get them vaccinated against flu.

This will help protect not only them but also those around them, particularly older grandparents or relations with an underlying health condition. Children in particular can increase the spread of the flu virus in the community, but vaccination helps curb this.

Pre-school children in Northern Ireland aged two years and over are eligible to receive the free flu vaccine through their GP.
