Communication is not a privilege. It’s a right.
Every child deserves a way to:
💬 express their needs
💬 share their thoughts
💬 connect with others
💬 be heard
And that doesn’t always mean spoken words.
For some children, communication looks like:
- gestures
- signs
- symbols
- devices
- sounds
- eye gaze
All of it counts. All of it matters. Because every child has something to say 🤍

One small tip that makes a BIG difference:
We mean well, but often slip in to testing mode saying things like “What’s this?” or “Say ball”. This can stall interaction and also take the fun out of things!
Instead try to model the language you want to hear, adopting the role of teacher rather than ‘tester’
✅ “It’s a ball!”
✅ “Big ball! Bounce bounce!”
Children learn language from hearing it used- even better if they’re having fun while doing so!
Teach more. Test less 💬

When it comes to helping children learn to communicate, the best toys actually do… less.
Language doesn’t come from pressing buttons —
it comes from interaction, imagination, and connection 💬
🧸 Toys that are “90% the child”:
• spark imagination
• can be used in lots of ways
• invite you to play together
Think: blocks, dolls, cars, animals… even a cardboard box!
🔊 Toys that are “90% the toy”:
• talk, sing, flash
• lead the play
• don’t leave much room for conversation
💡 The magic happens when you are part of the play.
It’s the back-and-forth, the shared attention, the silly moments…
That’s where language really grows.
So next time you’re choosing a toy, ask:
“Will this help us interact more?”
