SERC Lecturer Nik Thomas is preparing to take to the stage in Ibiza this month as his electronic music project continues to gain international recognition.

Nik is part of electronic music trio Visions of Light. Alongside his musical collaborators, Simon Sheldon and Dan Dub, Nik has built a growing reputation within the electronic music scene, with releases gaining support from listeners across the UK and Europe.

During their Ibiza visit, Visions of Light will perform a series of live shows and DJ sets across the island, including Friday 9 October - Visions of Light Live at Akasha; Saturday 10 October - DJ Set at Word of Mouth; and Sunday 11 October - Visions of Light Live at Word of Mouth.

The Ibiza performances come ahead of another major live date closer to home, when the trio will perform at Sandinos in Derry/Londonderry on 4 December. They also maintain a regular presence on the local music scene with appearances at Sunday Circles in Muriel's, Belfast, while Nik is a monthly resident DJ at Ulster Sports Club in Belfast.

Police Ards & North Down recently carried out a detect and deter drugs operation at SERC’s Bangor Campus, supported by Ziggy, the police K9.

The visit formed part of our ongoing work with the PSNI to detect and deter drug misuse, while also helping to educate students and staff about the serious consequences drugs can have for individuals, families and the wider community.

Working together, we are committed to helping keep our communities safe.

Ards and North Down Borough Council's Taste Autumn Finale Weekend finished with a bit of heat when SERC chefs took to the Cookery Theatre stage at the Walled Garden in Bangor Castle during the Chilli Festival.

Paul Mercer, Principal Lecturer and Commercial Hospitality Manager and Brian Magill, Lecturer in Catering, showcased a wide range of products from local artisan food producers and demonstrated a variety of dishes which also incorporated chillies.

Claire Haire inspires future healthcare heroes at SERC 💗

To mark Breast Cancer Awareness Month, guest speaker Claire Haire shared her powerful personal journey of living with and recovering from breast cancer with Year 2 Health & Care students.

Students gained invaluable first-hand insights into diagnosis, treatment, recovery and the patient experience — bridging the gap between classroom learning and real-world care. Claire highlighted the vital role of empathy, listening and compassionate, person-centred support.

Nikki Rainey, Curriculum Manager for Health and Care, said: “Hearing directly from someone who has experienced cancer treatment gives our future healthcare professionals a perspective that simply cannot be gained from textbooks alone.”

A timely reminder of the importance of breast awareness and recognising changes early.
