‘Catflap’ was a nickname given to me by a student early on in my science teaching. I taught a girl called Hope who was anything but, so I called her Despair. Her mum loved it, she vowed to come up with the perfect nickname for me. Despair returned after Christmas, ‘Mr Saywell! I have found a nickname for you now, Catflap!’ There is a brand of catflaps called ‘Staywell’. Hence ‘Catflap’ stuck, and here we are today at Catflap Science Tuition!

Hello! My name is Jacob and I’m an online Science tutor with a decade of experience. I believe that positive learning only happens when we trust those we are learning from which means good relationships are a key component to my teaching style. Having been homeschooled up to GCSE and teaching for almost a decade in both mainstream and special need schools I understand how lots of different learners tick. I am flexible and easy going, yet always challenge my students to do the best they can do. My key thoughts on education as a whole is that it should be tailored and it should be fun, if we leave school loving learning then we are set up for the rest of our lives whatever this world might throw at us.

My tutoring journey began long ago when I, as the oldest brother, taught my siblings their maths and science at home. This continued in my journey into A-Levels where I taught my classmates the difficult concepts we were learning as I began to grasp it myself. After all, if you can’t teach it simply then you haven’t really understood it! Since qualifying as a science teacher back in 2016 I have continued to hone my craft and through easy conversations can even get my fidgety 6 year old to wonder at the incredible world around us. You may have experienced that lightbulb moment before where something just clicks with an ‘ahh!’ To see that happen again and again as your tutor… well that’s what makes it worth doing.
