“Her story is a remarkable one of hard work, resilience and determination. Dyslexia should never be viewed as a disability that will hold someone back, it is a superpower that those individuals can harness as they see things in a different way that others may not.”

People like Ella, who experience adversity in their education, are a testament that conditions like dyslexia do not have to define ability.

As a secondary teacher of English, I have worked with many young people who come into my classroom with negative experiences of the subject and literacy in general.

This could stem from any number of things, such as:
- struggles with spelling or reading, OR
- misunderstanding the expectations of subject where there is often no ‘right’ or ‘wrong’ answer.

In my tuition lessons, as in my own classroom, I believe that the most important things I can do to encourage students to enjoy and, by extension, excel in English is to provide…

1. Accessible, relevant resources that will keep the interest of the individual student. For example, if a student has trouble keeping focus for long enough to sit down and read a book, we can try audiobooks. If a student, enjoys anime or manga we can integrate graphic novels or comic books into the curriculum to encourage reading. Encouraging reading in any medium is so vital to development in English as it will automatically develop vocabulary, fluency and enjoyment.

2. An open, respectful, supportive environment, where differences (in opinion, culture, beliefs etc.) are celebrated and discussed.

3. A successful working relationship! English is difficult enough for some kids without the added concern of a grumpy teacher. I PRIDE myself on building fantastic relationships with my students, harnessed in mutual understanding of expectations, respect and acceptance.

Ella McEwan had been told that continuing her education was futile due to her severe dyslexia.

Where did the summer go?! ☀️ It has been absolutely lovely to relax and take time with my favourite people but I’m also itching to get stuck into the new year with a new school, new students and new relationships to build! A couple of things to catch up on:

Firstly, congratulations 🎉 to everyone who received A-level results today! No matter the outcome, you should be so proud of what you have achieved!

The countdown is now on for all of my lovely GCSE students who receive their results next Thursday. I could not be more proud of their work and dedication this year. It has been a tough couple of years but I can’t wait to see happy faces next week!

I do still have a few more GCSE English tuition spaces for this upcoming academic year. With only FOURTEEN weeks until the November series, we are cranking up the volume and ensuring that we make the most of it. If anyone would know of anyone who might benefit from some additional support, please don’t hesitate to get in touch!

Finally, congratulations to all my current tuition students who stood firm and dedicated throughout this summer in preparing for their upcoming exams. Your hard work will pay off my friends - parents, you should be so proud!

Hi folks,

A massive thankyou, thankyou to everyone who has liked and shared my new tuition page!

Summer is almost here and the countdown can officially begin… ☀️

Following the announcement from the executive last week that GCSE English & Maths winter exams are once again to be brought forward to November/ December, this summer is going to be the perfect opportunity to get a jump on understanding the specifications and perfecting exam technique before starting back to school!

Therefore, I am offering a 5 week crash course on both Unit 1 (Year 11) & Unit 4 (Year 12) Exams that will take place on Monday mornings from 18 July - 15th August 2022. Places are limited to each group session but if there is a lot of interest, we can look at options in creating more small groups.

You will read in the following article that the education minister has promised that “young people will be provided with advance information on the focus of assessment for each qualification” and whilst this is certainly a welcome change for some, there are some concerns about whether this will make it harder to get into the higher mark bands in English.

I would encourage this extra oomph of help not only to students who find English challenging and are concerned about attaining the C grade, but also to those balancing between the upper grade boundaries.

Please do not hesitate to get in touch to discuss what I can do to help your child fulfil their potential in their GCSE English.

Thank you,

Hannah ❤️
