After months of research, stone working, grinding, polishing, hafting and testing, I’ve finally completed my experimental archaeology project for my Experimental Archaeology and Material Culture Diploma at UCD.

The project explored how different stone types — porcellanite, Portrush hornfels, dolerite and basalt — perform as Neolithic-style polished axe heads. I made and tested each axe to investigate differences in manufacture, cutting performance, edge durability, haft damage and use-wear.

It has been a challenging but hugely rewarding project, combining my passion for prehistoric technology, experimental archaeology and traditional skills.

A big thank you to everyone who supported and encouraged me throughout the process.

Now… time to submit it! 🪓🔥🌿

Polished Hand axes from hornfel a hard fine grained metamorphic rock. This was formed when dolerite magma baked mudstone and shale. These axes will be hafted and used to take down an oak tree and split it down as an experiment of the usability of axes made from this stone.
