Yogi Seeds - Yoga and Mindfulness for all

Yogi Seeds - Yoga and Mindfulness for all Children's, adult and family Yoga and Mindfulness facilitator. Group sessions, private 1-2-1 and sch

In today's society parents and children are often anxiety ridden, stressed out and unable to just relax and be their creative selves. As a parent to 2 boys my personal place of nourishment was at my adult yoga classes and in my personal meditation practices. I tried to show my own children what I had learnt but found it wasn't engaging enough for their young minds. After inspirational training with Special Yoga in London I discovered the way to really make yoga fun, enjoyable and appropriate for their age so that they could experience the well being they deserve. I hope to be able to share this with as many children as I can.

Kids have a much harder time regulating their emotions, thoughts, and behaviour when they are surrounded by dysregulated adults.

One of the most effective ways we can help kids become calm or stay calm is by being aware of our own emotions and modelling a calming emotional response to events and situations. Through a process called co-regulation, we can use our own calm nervous system to help someone else calm theirs.

Our nervous systems are incredibly wise in that they rely on cues from the environment to determine how to react, respond, think, feel, and behave. Our nervous systems match and sync up with those around us. When kids are surrounded by dysregulated adults, their nervous systems tend to match the energies they’re around.

Co-regulation is a prerequisite for self-regulation. In order for kids to develop the skills required for self-regulation (also called self-soothing or auto-regulation), they have to know what it feels like through experience. Some kids, and especially those surrounded by dysregulated adults, don’t consistently receive this essential prerequisite for self-regulation — a safe, calm, and attuned nervous system to help them calm down.

The same could also be true for dysregulated adults. If we have not been shown how to regulate ourselves through a felt experience we have a much more difficult time doing it in adulthood. In the absence of co-regulation, all future attempts at self-regulation are stress reactions and survival responses. In order to effectively regulate our own emotions, we have to first know what it feels like.

When kids are surrounded by dysregulated adults, dysregulated peers, or a chaotic and high pressure environment, they have a much harder time responding in a clear, rational, balanced, and calm manner. And this is not just true of kids. Dysregulation is contagious for our nervous systems so we must do our best to soothe ourselves so kids can learn how to do it too.

Over the last few years, we've witnessed more women receiving an autistic diagnosis later in life. As one of these women, I am passionate about making a difference for our next generation of autistic girls who are struggling to understand themselves and how they fit in in the world. This is for parents, educators, carers, autistic girls and young women (diagnosed or suspecting autism.)
For the past few months, Jyoti and I have been working on Special Yoga for Autistic Girls Webinar & Supporting Materials.

Sooooo true!

Sooooo true!

"Good afternoon, Mum, thanks for meeting with me,
I have concerns about your daughter, you see.
She's not like the others I'm teaching this year,
She's overly sensitive, bursts into tears
Over just about everything, silly old things,
Then she sticks to the classroom assistant and clings.
When we do group work she doesn't engage,
And I don't think she's writing like children her age.
She has the same discussions again and again,
And have you seen the funny way she holds a pen?
She's always the last to get dressed for PE
And the last out for lunch, break and assembly.
And she always looks lost like she's not really there,
She won't answer her peers, she's not very aware.
She won't pay attention and listen in lesson,
She's always preoccupied with her obsession.
She won't eat much lunch and she can't tie her shoes...
So tell me, Mum, what are you going to do?"

"Thank you Miss T, your report is fantastic!
It's abundantly clear that my daughter's Autistic.
The process will go smoothly if you share your view
So I'll need that in writing - an email will do.
As for support it's so easy to see,
Most of her mentioned needs are sensory.
The tears are caused by overload and frustration,
The writing and pen grip are proprioception.
The same can be said for her shoes and her dressing,
And as for the group work, it's very distressing!
Lunch is a barrage of sights smells and sounds,
It's so hard to eat with all of that around.
She shuts herself down out of self preservation,
She needs to be provided with regulation -
Sensory items and regular breaks,
If she can't eat lunch you should let her have shakes.
She needs support from an adult she can trust,
In tasks where she struggles she shouldn't be rushed.
If school can't provide these adjustments, Miss T,
We'll have to apply for an EHCP."

"Autism, Mum? What makes you think that?
I have no concerns, I just wanted a chat!
Your daughter is actually getting on well,
And meeting her targets, although she can't spell.
And once she's stopped crying she's totally fine!
She's just a daydreamer and that's not a sign!
The problems she does have need fixing at home,
Like teaching her how to get changed on her own
And ensuring she knows that she must eat her food
And reminding her that blanking her peers is rude.
I'm sure it is hard and I do feel for you,
I know of a parenting course you can do.
The provisions you list won't be necessary
Your daughter's support needs are quite ordinary!"
