🎉 Celebrating Success – Well Done Team Pathways! 🎉

Last week we celebrated the incredible hard work, dedication and achievements of our students over the past year on the Pathways to Progress programme. Thank you to everyone who joined us to recognise this fantastic milestone.

Throughout their journey, they haven't just learned new skills and gained valuable qualifications, they've grown together, built lasting friendships, supported one another and created a community that will continue long after the course has ended.

Thanks were given to all the partners who have supported this success that will make a lasting positive impact in the community.

Students on the Skills For Success course at our Ayr Campus developed confidence, communication and employability skills through a supportive learning environment designed to help them take positive next steps towards further education, volunteering and employment.

The Skills For Success course supports students with additional learning needs to build independence and essential life and work skills. Through practical activities, group projects and community engagement, students are encouraged to develop their confidence, social skills and ability to work with others in real-life settings.

Throughout the course, students take part in a wide range of activities focused on communication, teamwork, personal development and employability. These experiences help learners grow in confidence while developing transferable skills that can support future opportunities both in and outside the workplace.

Zoe, a student on the course, said: “Since joining the course, I’ve become much more confident speaking to people and trying new things. I’ve made new friends, learned useful skills and feel more prepared for what I want to do in the future.”

Sophie MacGibbon, Community Learning Facilitator, said: “It’s fantastic to see students grow in confidence throughout their time on the course. We focus on creating a supportive environment where everyone feels encouraged to try new things, work together and recognise their own strengths. Watching students achieve goals they may not have thought possible is incredibly rewarding.”

Elaine Connor, Community Learning Facilitator, added: “The course is all about helping students develop skills for everyday life and future opportunities. We encourage independence, teamwork and communication through practical activities that allow students to learn in a way that works for them. Seeing the friendships and confidence develop over the year has been wonderful.”

The course also gives students opportunities to engage with the local community and take part in activities that strengthen their teamwork, problem-solving and interpersonal skills. By learning in practical and supportive ways, students are able to gain confidence in their abilities while preparing for the next stage of their journey.

Through Skills For Success, students are not only developing valuable employability and life skills but are also building self-belief, independence and a strong sense of achievement in a positive and inclusive learning environment.

Students on Ayrshire College's Me2u course demonstrated teamwork, initiative and community spirit by organising a successful coffee morning in support of Shortlees Primary School.

As part of their Working With Others unit, the group planned and delivered the event to raise funds for the local school while developing valuable workplace and employability skills.

The coffee morning provided students with an opportunity to put their learning into practice, taking responsibility for every aspect of the event. Going above and beyond the course requirements, students prepared a range of home-baked goods, carried out risk assessments and worked collaboratively to ensure the event ran smoothly.

Throughout the morning, students took on a variety of roles including meeting and greeting guests, serving tea and coffee, managing the home baking stall and supporting the overall organisation of the event. Their enthusiasm, professionalism and commitment helped create a welcoming atmosphere for staff and visitors alike.

Following the event held at Shortlees Community Centre, students also offered teachers at Shortlees Primary School a selection of their home baking and thanks to the hard work and dedication of everyone involved, the group raised a total of ÂŁ86 for Shortlees Primary School.

The Me2u programme is designed to help individuals prepare for a return to the workplace through a combination of classroom learning and practical work experience placements within East Ayrshire. Students work towards qualifications in areas including Customer Care, Problem Solving, Working with Others and Using a Keyboard, while gaining valuable experience in a real working environment.

Nicola Corson, Community Learning Facilitator at Ayrshire College, said: "I am incredibly proud of the commitment and teamwork shown by the group throughout this project. The coffee morning gave students an excellent opportunity to put their skills into practice while making a positive contribution to the school community.

"They took ownership of the event from start to finish, volunteering to take on additional responsibilities such as baking, completing risk assessments and organising different aspects of the day. Their professionalism and willingness to support one another was fantastic to see and raising ÂŁ86 for Shortlees Primary School was a wonderful achievement."

The coffee morning highlighted the importance of collaboration, communication and initiative, key skills that will support students as they continue their employability journey and prepare for future employment opportunities.

Congratulations to all the students involved for their hard work and for making the event such a success.

Hi, I'm Mags and I completed the Peer Programme at Ayrshire College in 2025.

Before the course, I had been in residential treatment for 18 months and had recently come home. I hoped, at some point, to work within recovery services.

I joined the course as I had been going through some personal struggles and wanted to add some structure back into my life. After engaging with services in Ayr, I heard about this programme.

I’ve gained a lot from the course. The connections I’ve made will long outlast my time at college itself. I’ve also gained structure and routine, as well as the confidence and self-esteem to re-enter the workforce, having improved my IT and literacy skills after time away from them.

I am currently working as a key worker within residential rehabilitation, having also volunteered with the same organisation throughout the course.

Mark MacMillan, Employability and Engagement Officer on the Peer Programme at Ayrshire College, said: “It has been a pleasure to support Margaret throughout her journey on the Peer Programme. She has demonstrated real commitment, resilience and a genuine passion for helping others, utilising her own experiences to make a positive difference. Stories like Margaret's highlight the importance of supportive learning environments and the impact programmes like this can have in helping students rebuild confidence, develop skills and progress into meaningful employment.”

To those considering this course – go for it. The leap of faith will pay off and you’ll be glad you did it. When I started, I didn’t believe I would be ready for employment but the initial commitment to starting this course has led me to where I am today.
