I taught two of this lovely mum's children, and hearing her kind words means the world. πŸ’›

Ever heard your nursery mention 'oral blending' and had no idea what it meant? πŸ‘€

Oral blending is just saying sounds separately, then blending them together to make a word - all out loud, no letters needed. Think 'c... a... t' β†’ 'cat!'

It's actually a skill worth practising before your child even sees a letter - it means one less thing for little brains to juggle when reading starts.

Try it in the car this week: say a word in separate sounds like 'd... o... g' and see if they can blend it back together. You might be surprised! πŸš—πŸ”€

What is phonics, really? πŸ”€βœ¨

Phonics is how little ones learn to connect sounds with letters - the building blocks that eventually turn into reading and writing. At this age, it's not about worksheets - it's about play, rhythm, and repetition!

πŸ‘Ά Minis (1–2.5 yrs) - sounds, rhymes and speaking & listening skills, designed alongside a speech therapist, with small class sizes so every child gets 1:1 attention.

πŸ§’ Preschool (2.5–4 yrs) - sound recognition, alliteration, and blending/segmenting - the real foundations for reading and writing - plus motor skills activities that support handwriting.

The goal? Make the earliest steps toward reading feel like play, not a lesson. πŸ’›

πŸ”€ Playdoh Sound Buttons + Magnetic Letters = Reading in Action! πŸ”€

Today's word: MAN πŸ‘¦

Watch him press each sound button, sound it out (m-a-n), then blend it all together into a real word he can read! πŸ™Œ
This hands-on, multisensory approach is exactly why our little learners feel phonics, not just hear it. Touch it, say it, blend it, read it. πŸ’ͺ

Try this at home! 🏠

Grab some playdoh, roll 3 little balls, and press each one as you sound out a CVC word (like m-a-n, c-a-t, or d-o-g), then blend the sounds together. Simple, hands-on, and a brilliant way to build reading skills through play!

✨ Practising CVC words this way builds real reading confidence - one squishy button at a time!

Teaching your toddler ABCs? You might be missing the one thing that actually helps them read πŸ”€

If you've taught your toddler the alphabet song - "A, B, C, D..." 🎢 - that's letter names. Brilliant, keep doing it!

But here's what catches so many parents out: letter names don't help kids read. πŸ‘€

When your child sees "cat," sounding it out as "cee-ay-tee" gets them nowhere. What works is the letter sound β€” "c" says "c" (like the start of "cup"), not "cee."

This is one of the biggest gaps I see after 14+ years of teaching πŸ‘©β€πŸ« - and it's such an easy fix:

βœ… Instead of "that's the letter B," try "that's the /b/ sound, like ball"
βœ… Instead of naming letters on a sign, ask "what sound does that start with?"
βœ… Save the alphabet song for singing - great for memory, just not for early reading 🎡

Schools teach sounds first for exactly this reason - it's how kids crack the code of reading, by blending sounds together: "/c/ /a/ /t/... cat!" 🐱

You don't need to overhaul anything at home. Just swap "what letter is that?" for "what sound does that make?" - and you're already ahead πŸ’ͺ

This is exactly the groundwork we build every week in our Preschool Phonics classes πŸ“š, so blending sounds feels like second nature by the time school starts.

Did you know the difference before today? Let me know πŸ‘‡

Hi, I'm Karen πŸ‘‹πŸ’›

If you're new here, I thought it was time to properly introduce myself!

I'm a mum to two little ones and a primary teacher with 14+ years of experience helping children learn, grow and thrive. Reading has always been my passion, and after becoming a mum myself, I knew I wanted to find a way to continue supporting children and families while also
being more present for my own two little ones.

That's what led me to Phonics with Robot Reg πŸ€–

I'm so excited to share phonics tips, fun activities and practical ideas to help little learners build confidence and develop a love of learning.

And the exciting part? I'll be launching Phonics with Robot Reg classes in Aylesbury and the surrounding villages this September! πŸŽ‰

I'd love to get to know you too! 😊

πŸ‘‡ Tell me in the comments:
How old is your little learner?

πŸ’› Feel free to send me a message if you'd like to chat about classes or your child's phonics journey.
