🎓 Two weeks into A Level — are you doing these 3 things yet?

1️⃣ Review this week's learning

📋 Find and download your exam board's specification — then actually use it. It's one of the best checklists you'll have for the next two years.

🧠 Use active recall techniques such as blurting to find out what you actually know — and, more importantly, what you don't.

2️⃣ Don't ignore something you don't understand

🐸 You're not an ostrich — don't put your head in the sand. Eat that frog (not literally!).

Skipping something difficult won't make it less difficult. Deal with it now. Ask your teacher. Watch a video. Use a revision guide. Close the gap and keep moving forward.

3️⃣ Start using exam questions early

You don't have to wait until you've “finished” a topic.

A simple search for:

🔎 [Exam board] + A Level + [Subject] + practice questions

will often help you find relevant questions to get started.

But don't just complete them and move on. Mark your answers, understand where you lost marks and try again.

Practice doesn't need to be perfect — it needs to be purposeful.

Small habits now can make a big difference later in the course.

DON'T WAIT FOR MOCKS

Year 11 has started. Make the year count.

One week into Year 11, now is a great time to start building the habits that will make a difference later in the year.

Three things I’m encouraging students to do now, rather than waiting until mocks:

🔎 Start identifying gaps now
Which topics from Years 9 and 10 have you forgotten or never felt completely confident with? Exam board specifications and personalised learning checklists are a great place to start.

🧠 Retrieve little and often
Regularly test yourself on previous topics rather than simply rereading notes. We learn best by 'doing' - pick up a pen and see how much you remember.

📝 Start using exam questions early
Don’t wait until you’ve “finished revising”. Exam questions help you learn how to apply what you know. Know your exam board and use the free past papers on their website.

You don’t need hours of revision every evening. Small, consistent habits now can make Year 11 much more manageable later.

As a science teacher, it probably won’t come as a surprise that even my downtime sometimes involves a bit of science! 🦠📖

I’ve been making my way through The Good Virus by Tom Ireland — a fascinating look at bacteriophages, the viruses that infect bacteria, and the role they could play in tackling some of the challenges we face with antibiotic resistance.

But this photo also reminded me of something I often tell students: taking a break is important.

Even when you enjoy what you’re doing, you can’t be productive all the time.

For students, particularly with a new school year approaching, there can be a temptation to think that being “prepared” means constantly revising, working or getting ahead. It doesn’t.

Rest, switching off and making time for things you enjoy are important too. Sometimes stepping away is exactly what allows you to come back more focused and ready to learn.

For me, that might still involve a science book… but at least there are no exam questions at the end of the chapter! 😄

And yes, the teacher planner is already out ready for September (my blank canvas!)… 🔬📚

🎉 GCSE Results Day — good luck to everyone receiving their results today!

To all of this year's GCSE students: whatever is waiting inside that envelope or on that screen, I hope today gives you the opportunity to celebrate the work you've put in and look forward to whatever comes next.

And to those whose next step is A-Level Biology... 🧬

Firstly — enjoy the rest of your summer! You don't need to spend the next couple of weeks trying to teach yourself the A-Level course.

But there are a few simple things worth knowing before September:

🧬 Refresh, don't relearn
A-Level Biology builds on your GCSE foundations. Being secure with topics such as cells, enzymes, transport and genetics will help — but there's no need to start learning new A-Level content yet.

📊 Don't forget the maths
Percentages, ratios, graphs and interpreting data are all an important part of A-Level Biology.

📝 Expect questions to feel different
Knowing the content is only part of the challenge. You'll increasingly need to apply familiar Biology to unfamiliar situations and work out exactly what a question is asking.

📚 Build good habits from the beginning
There's a lot of content across the two years. Regular retrieval and keeping on top of earlier topics will make life much easier than trying to relearn everything before exams.

Most importantly, don't worry if A-Level Biology initially feels like a big step up.

You're not expected to be an A-Level student on day one. Those skills develop over time.

Either way, starting September feeling prepared can make a big difference.

That doesn’t mean spending the rest of the summer revising. A few small, purposeful steps can help students refresh what they know, spot any gaps and head into the new school year feeling a little more confident and prepared.
