🎄🎅 Happy Advent! 🎅🎄

Day 12, Saturday night, and if you're anything like me, you're looking forward to Strictly. If you've ever fancied learning to dance like they do, then Joanna from JBD Fitness & Dance is the woman for you! Joanna is a member of our neighbouring region The Athena Network - West Chllterns

Here's a little more about her and her business:

❓ Tell us a little about you and your business

🌟 I help women over 35 to feel better, look better and move better through fitness, dance and nutrition; in more socially interactive times I also create a magical moment for wedding couples and their guests to treasure by creating bespoke first Wedding dances.

This year been very different than I could have ever imagined, I never thought that I’d be delivering most of my classes and course online.

There has most definitely been a mix of emotions coming up for my for me this year... accepting and embracing that we must all do our bit to reduce the rate of infection and protect our wonderful, wonderful NHS, (some of whom are attending my online classes and I absolutely could not be proud of each and everyone one of them for finding their me time.) I feel so so grateful that I find myself surrounded by love, hope and a community that thrives on supporting one another.

❓ Tell us a bit about why you do what you do

🌟 I love to empower women to take control of their actions and their lifestyle. I personally enjoy being active, eating well and having fun, whilst encouraging others to also lead an active and healthy life. I love to share my story and experience, and to enable others to step outside of their comfort zone and into their power, by lending a helping hand and lots of accountability, but mainly to have lots of fun with friends in a supportive environment.

❓ Who do you help and how?

🌟 I help women over 35 to achieve their fitness and lifestyle goals. I do this through fitness classes, self empowerment days and meditation retreats. Our most recent addition is all taught online. In 2020 our Lift Lean strength and resistance training programmes have transformed how I, as a 45 year old peri-menopausal woman, both look and feel, so I absolutely had to share them with my members old and new, who have been blown away by the results.

❓ Why did you join Athena and how has it helped you and your business?

💜 I first joined Athena, after transitioning to create my own dance and fitness business that included my passion for ballroom and Latin dance (from there our wedding packages were born). I knew I wanted to offer something more than just fitness classes, and was experiencing my own life challenges (specifically with fertility) And I knew I wanted to share my experiences with others. I had a budding idea for self empowerment days and I needed help to develop them.

Since joining Athena I've developed my business to new heights through collaboration with other experts in their field. For example our empowerment days are co hosted by a nutritional therapist I met at Athena. And just before Covid, I'd launched mediation retreats with a sound therapist who I also met through Athena.

I'm also delighted to have Athena members as part of my current online memberships, including our new lift lean course 💜

We returned to our first indoor class last night. Fairford Leys Centre and Jo, did a fabulous job of making us feel safe.
It was so good seeing each other. Jo has been brilliant with her online classes since March. She has kept us together and kept me sane 🤪 So happy we can meet in person again at last all COVID secure and socially distanced of course.
I can’t recommend JBD Fitness and Dance highly enough.
It's not the Midnight Walk Warm-up. It's the Not The Midnight Walk Warm-up!

Oooohhhh, that's too confusing for this time in the morning...but wakey wakey, everyone, it's time to walk for the Hospice!

Thank you so much to Jo of JBD Fitness & Dance for this fantastic ten-minute warm-up.

Have a great walk, and thank you for all your support and love for the Hospice!
Ever wondered why Jo Beardsmore-Dilks of JBD Fitness & Dance does the Midnight Walk warm-up every year, without fail?

It's because she has a very personal reason for wanting to give something back to the Hospice.

Wow! That was a hot, hot, hot class!
I joined JBD Fitness & Dance 3 months ago, and can honestly say it’s the best fitness class I’ve done, even in 27 degrees! I love the fact that people in class are supportive and friendly, although a little sweaty tonight 😂
If you’re thinking of getting fit over Summer, do a trial class - I know you’ll love it!
Puddle Ducks Cherwell & Aylesbury Vale Star Teacher – Summer 2019 is… Monique!!!
We often say we have the #bestjobintheworld and the nominations our customers have sent in for #StarTeacherAward are absolute testament to that!

Joanna from JBD Fitness & Dance selected the winning nomination from Max and his Mum, Rachel.

She said: " This one leaves the biggest impression as not only is the child empowered but also the parents, which I feel is key to the child's development with swimming. When the whole family grow in confidence, amazing things happen - so very valuable!"

Congratulations Monique and thank you Max and Rachel - your words mean so much:
'Monique makes the classes so much fun for the children and the adults and there are always lots of smiles all round when we are in class. We have been taking Max swimming with Monique since he was 4 months old and he has gained so much confidence in the water as he has grown older (he’s now 2 years old). As parents, my husband and I have grown in confidence as well. We’ve just come back from our first family holiday abroad, where we spent lots of time in the pool with Max practicing what we have learnt in class. We truly believe that if it wasn’t for Puddle Ducks and Monique, we wouldn’t have been as confident in the water as we were on holiday.'

Monique will now be a contender for the national Puddle Ducks Star Teacher award – good luck Monique!!

**I do like Jamie Oliver's Superfood recipes**
Here’s one for you to try
Healthy chicken Caesar
Awesome shredded salad & croutons
Serves 2
Ingredients
• 1 lemon
• 15 g Parmesan cheese
• 2 anchovy fillets in oil
• 4 heaped tablespoons natural yoghurt
• ½ teaspoon English mustard
• 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
• white wine vinegar
• extra virgin olive oil
• 1 small red onion
• ½ a small cauliflower (300g)
• 1 romaine lettuce
• olive oil
• 1 sprig of fresh rosemary
• 2 x 120 g free-range skinless chicken breasts
• 1 thick slice of wholemeal bread
Method
1. Finely grate the lemon zest and Parmesan into a large bowl. Slice and add the anchovies, along with the yoghurt, mustard and Worcestershire sauce. Squeeze in half the lemon juice, add 1 tablespoon of vinegar and 2 tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil and mix to make your dressing.
2. Now you’re going to turn regular salad into a thing of beauty by either taking your time with good knife skills, or ideally, investing in a mandolin for ease, elegance and accuracy (use the guard!). Start by peeling and very finely slicing the red onion, then stir it through the dressing. Click off and discard any tatty outer leaves from the cauliflower, then very finely slice it. Finely slice the lettuce by hand and pile both on top of the dressed onion, tossing together only moments before serving.
3. Put 1 teaspoon of olive oil in a frying pan on a medium heat. Pick the rosemary leaves over the chicken and lightly season it on both sides, flattening it slightly with the heel of your hand. Cook for 4 minutes on each side, or until golden and cooked through. Cube the bread and toast alongside the chicken, moving regularly until evenly golden and gnarly, removing only when super-crispy. Toss the salad together and season to perfection, slice up the chicken and serve with a sprinkling of croutons and lemon wedges for squeezing over.

I do like Jamie Oliver's Superfood recipes
Here’s one for you to try.
Smoky veggie feijoada
Black beans, squash, peppers & okra
Serves 2
Ingredients
• ½ a butternut squash , (600g)
• olive oil
• 1 heaped teaspoon ground coriander
• 1 heaped teaspoon smoked paprika
• 3 mixed-colour peppers
• 2 red onions
• 4 cloves of garlic
• 4 fresh bay leaves
• 2 x 400 g tins of black beans
• 100 g okra
• 150 g brown rice
• 2 ripe mixed-colour tomatoes
• ½-1 fresh red chilli
• 1 bunch of fresh coriander , (30g)
• 1 lime
• 2 tablespoons natural yoghurt
Method
1. Preheat the oven to 200°C/400°F/gas 6. Halve and deseed the squash, then carefully chop into 3cm chunks. In a large roasting tray, toss and massage it with 1 teaspoon of oil, the ground coriander and a pinch of sea salt and black pepper. Deseed the peppers and cut into 3cm chunks, then, in a separate tray, toss and massage them with 1 teaspoon of oil and the smoked paprika. Place both trays in the oven for 35 minutes, or until softened.
2. Meanwhile, peel and finely chop ¼ of an onion and put aside, then roughly chop the rest and place in a large casserole pan on a low heat with 1 tablespoon of oil. Crush in the garlic, add the bay leaves and a good splash of water and cook for 20 minutes, or until soft, stirring regularly. Tip in the beans, juice and all, then half-fill each empty tin with water, swirl and pour into the pan. Simmer until the time is up on the squash and peppers, then stir both into the pan. Trim, finely slice and add the okra, and simmer for a further 20 minutes, or until the feijoada is dark and delicious, loosening with an extra splash of water, if needed. Meanwhile, cook the rice according to the packet instructions, then drain.
3. To make a quick salsa, deseed the tomatoes, then finely chop with as much chilli as you like and most of the coriander leaves. Scrape into a bowl with the reserved finely chopped onion and toss with the lime juice, then season to perfection. Remove 4 portions of feijoada, bag them up and once completely cool, freeze for a rainy day, when you’ll be really grateful it’s there. Serve the remaining feijoada with the rice and salsa, a spoonful of yoghurt and a sprinkling of the remaining coriander leaves.

Last few spaces remaining 🏋️‍♀️

There's at least 6 very good reasons to do Lift Lean:

1) Improved fat loss
When lifting weights, you build lean muscle. The more muscle you have, the quicker your metabolism will work. This means that weight training will help to boost your metabolism, and in turn, burn more calories, meaning a reduction in body fat and improve weight loss. For each pound of muscle you gain, you’ll burn 30 to 50 more calories per day!

2) Enhance your mood and reduce stress
Exercise releases endorphins which improve your mood, prevent pain, and fight depression.
Women who strength train commonly report feeling more confident and capable as a result of their training.

3) Gain strength without bulking
Unlike men, women typically don’t gain size from strength training. This is due to levels of testosterone women have compared to men. Typically women have around 10% of the testosterone of men. Because of this, women will develop muscle tone and definition without the size.

4) Reduce your risk of injury, back pain and arthritis
Weight training not only strengthens muscles but also increases bone density. This reduces the risk of fractures and broken bones. It also builds stronger connective tissues and increases joint stability which, as a result, helps prevent injury.

Weight lighting can also increase spinal bone density and create a strong and healthy spine. This, coupled with an adequate amount of dietary calcium, can be a women’s best defence against osteoporosis.

It can also help with correcting bad posture and building a strong back and core will also help prevent any lower back pain.

5) Improve your athletic performance
Having a stronger body can also help with other sports by improving power, speed, agility and endurance.

Weight training will help the body adapt to situations it will face during sport as well as throughout everyday life. Make sure your exercise regime incorporates both aerobic exercise and strength training.

6) Reduce the risk of heart disease and diabetes
Weight training can help to improve cardiovascular health by lowering bad cholesterol and increasing good cholesterol, and in turn this will help to lower blood pressure.
Using weight training as part of your routine will also improve the way the body processes sugar, which may reduce the risk of diabetes.

Exercise can be fun
Exercise and physical activity can be a fun way to spend some time. It gives you a chance to unwind, enjoy the outdoors or simply engage in activities that make you happy. Physical activity can also help you connect with family or friends in a fun social setting. So, take a dance class, hit the hiking trails or join a soccer team. Find a physical activity you enjoy, and just do it. If you get bored, try something new.
