My Spooky Season Books!

What am I reading this spooky season?

1. Witchcraft: A History in Thirteen Trials
I'm already enjoying this non-fiction book, discussing the trials of both historic and modern day witches!

2. Dracula's Guest and Other Weird Stories
I love Bram Stoker's Dracula, so it felt very fitting to read this!

3. The War of the Worlds
It's not strictly a Halloween themed read (more sci-fi!), but it's a book I've been meaning to read for a long time. Plus, it has its spooky moments!

Hi! My name is Emily and I own Layton Education. I've been supporting learners through personalised 1:1 and 2:1 tuition in English and the 11+, from KS1 up to GCSE, for over two and a half years now after leaving classroom teaching. After seeing the frustration felt by students in the classroom, I've made it my mission to ensure no learner is left behind.

I have expertise in a range of diagnoses and learning difficulties, as well as having a calm and patient approach. I believe in a combined strategy where confidence building and knowledge expansion work hand in hand.

Studying Bottom's transformation

This week I am delighted to share the analytical work that one pupil completed on Bottom's character from A Midsummer Night's Dream. We've been following Bottom's journey closely through the play, whilst considering all his character traits. We also found quotes to match each section of his personality, as well as a small drawing of Bottom after his transformation!

National Poetry Day - here is my favourite!

The theme this year is Wonder. My favourite poem, Remains by Simon Armitage, acts as a stark contrast to this year's theme. It's poignant and real, creating a vivid picture of the livelihoods of those suffering PTSD and shock after being at war. I love that this poem is on the GCSE curriculum, and find that nearly all pupils enjoy studying the poem. It's strong messages are accompanied by multiple poetic techniques, which make it great for studying. There's definitely a reason why Simon Armitage is Poet Laureate!

What languages do you speak?

Did you know there are approximately 7,170 living languages spoken in the world? I couldn't believe that statistic! So, let's celebrate all the wonderful languages that exist!

Can music help with learning?

Music can be a great learning tool! There's a reason that young children are introduced to nursery rhymes and sing-alongs, as they often create a sense of fun whilst also encouraging learning. So how can we translate that once we're in school? Here are some suggestions:

1. Create a song/mnemonic to help remember key techniques, equations, strategies etc. I still remember some of the ones I used when I was revising for my own exams!

2. Match songs to topics. Make a list of all your favourite songs. Assign each topic a song, and once you've finished homework, revision or studying for that topic, listen to the song!

3. Put on instrumental music to aid focus. I often find that gentle, ambient music helps me get tasks done (especially the less exciting admin tasks!).
