๐Walking amongst the vibrant colours of autumn leaves can help the mind recharge, enhance creative thinking - and can be deeply calming and enjoyable. ๐
โ๏ธMENTAL CLARITY & RESTORATION: ๐๐๐
The radiant colors of autumn create a visually stimulating environment that can help the mind recharge. According to the Attention Restoration Theory, natural environments like autumn forests help restore focus and cognitive function by allowing the brain to recover from mental fatigue. ๐๐๐
โญ๏ธCREATIVE BOOST: ๐๐๐
The unique beauty of autumn can enhance creative thinking. The combination of vivid colors and the peacefulness of nature promotes mental relaxation, which is conducive to creative problem-solving and visualisation. ๐๐๐
๐FEAST FOR THE SENSES: ๐๐๐
Autumn brings not only a change in colour but also shifts in temperature, sounds, and smells. The crispness of the air, the rustling of fallen leaves underfoot, and the earthy smells of decomposing foliage all create a layered multi-sensory experience that is deeply calming and enjoyable. ๐๐๐

String of sausages lichen.
At first I couldn't see why this lichen has such a funny name. Looking closer, the pale grey / green swollen stems do resemble sausages.
This beautiful beard lichen seen at Wistman's Wood, Dartmoor is a strong indicator of clean air as it won't tolerate pollution. It's latin name is Usnea articulatea
Breathing is such an important part of forest bathing - so ideally we want to do it where there is clean air - and most lichens are a good indicator of this.
In fact Dr Qing Li, who is the Japanese founder of forest bathing, and our scientific advisor at the Forest Bathing Institute says that 50 % of the benefits of forest bathing come from breathing in forest air which contains tree essential oils with therapeutic properties.
To find out more and experience some of the potential benefits for yourself, why not join one of our forest bathing sessions locally at Wendover Woods.

One way I love to explore nature when I have a bit more time is by drawing or painting...

'Some of our most aromatic trees are conifers. They have needles for leaves and are mostly evergreen, so they stay green all year round, unlike trees with flat leaves, which fall in the autumn with new ones returning in the Spring.
Conifers can live for hundreds of years - some for thousands! Coniferous trees were the first aromatic plants on earth, appearing 300 million years ago.
So when we walk in coniferous forest, we have a chance to smell what the world smelled like right back at the beginning of time.'

Out for a walk yesterday. Just stopped for about 20-30 seconds to look at these beautiful willow leaves that I never noticed before.
Elegant long pointy fingers lifting up and down with the breeze. So many different tones of green. Dark shadows and white highlights. Other less obvious colours...yellows, oranges. Shiny on top, matt underneath.
So much around us when we stop for a minute. Or even half a minute...
