Team work makes the dream work!
The Horse Trust
When a farrier puts down their tools for the day, it's important to respect their business hours.
Like everyone it's important to maintain a healthy work/life balance ⚖
Messaging out of work hours can feel like an unexpected guest arriving for Sunday Roast with your family to talk about appointments and horse shoeing.
✅ Studies show - people who maintain clear boundaries between work and their personal life have increased job satisfaction, productivity & overall wellbeing
✅ Studies show - people who felt obligated to respond to work messages outside of working hours experienced higher levels of stress and reduced wellbeing (University of Sussex)
✅ Studies show - poor work-life balance is a significant contributor to stress, anxiety, and depression – (The Mental Health Foundation)
‼️If it's an emergency make sure you contact your vet as soon as possible‼️
🧠 Farriers - remember to lead by example & follow your own rules!
Why you should save the hoof oil (& other topical treatments) until AFTER your farrier's appointment
🔹 Hoof assessment
- lotions and potions can hide a number of sins. Having a clear picture of the condition of the hoof before the farrier begins is really important to identify any underlying issues such as cracks or brittle hooves so they can be addressed correctly
🔹 Slippery feet (this includes feathers too!)
- it’s important for the farrier to be able to handle the horse’s legs and feet without them slipping through their hands or legs. This goes for their tools too - no one wants a hammer flying through the air because it’s covered in oil!
🔹It clogs and blunts farriers’ tools
- farriers’ tools need to be in tip top condition for them to carry out the best job possible – you wouldn’t want your hairdresser using blunt scissors ✂️
🔹 Some hoof oils are flammable, you definitely don’t want a hot shoe going near them 🔥
🔹Oils can affect the application of glues – this may result in your appointment having to be re-scheduled should your horse need it. Give your farrier as many options as possible to shoe your horse the best they can
Avoid applying 24hrs before your appointment. If you forget, try your best to towel off the excess 😊

I saw Paige speak at the Hoof Care Summit. Her presentations are great and definitely one not to miss.
We're delighted to bring you our fourth speaker at this year's Focus, Paige Poss 🤩
Paige Poss has dedicated over 25 years to the hoof care industry, where she specialises in trimming horses’ hooves, conduction distal limb anatomy studies, and creating educational materials. Holding a BS degree in Animal Science from North Carolina State University, Paige initially ventured into the field as a lab tech at various research facilities. However, her journey took a turn in 1999 when a lame horse ignited her passion for hoof care.
In collaboration with her business partner, Jenny Edwards, Paige co-founded Anatomy of the Equine, LLC, a platform that publishes and sells education materials tailored for farriers and veterinary professionals. Paige’s unique approach blends her love for photography, science, anatomy and art. Her fascination with hoof and horse anatomy has led her to dissect and photographically document hundreds of lower legs and even whole horses. Her most impactful dissection images, to date, focus on the palmar digital nerve as it descends deep into the hoof capsule.

Delighted to be speaking for The British Horse Foundation on farriery for foals and youngstock.
🎉🎉 Your foal has arrived!
❓ What next? The arrival of a foal can be quite overwhelming, especially after a few long days (or weeks) of sitting up patiently watching your mare. So it is crucial that you are well prepared for the first few weeks of your foal’s life and know what to watch for in both your mare and foal. And the work doesn’t stop there, before you know it, it’ll be weaning time and then a couple of years to prepare your youngster for life in our world.
📆 The webinars are free and you can register for all the webinars in the series using this link, https://www.britishhorsefoundation.org.uk/spring-webinars-2024
We hope that you can join us!
The third speaker we have lined up for you at this year's Focus is Haydn Price DipWCF GradDipELR, we're so excited to welcome him to the stage 🤩
Haydn Price graduated in 1983 and has run a mixed practice in South Wales for 38 years. During that time, he has developed a special interest in performance and lameness shoeing techniques. He has also established both a need for, and been instrumental in the practical application and understanding of Farriery specific biomechanics, along with utilising equine gait analysis systems for both profiling and quantitative data collection.
He held the post of lead consultant farrier for 20 years to the British Equestrian Federation (BEF) and World Class Equestrian Programme (WCP) before retiring in March 2019. His responsibilities included the development and implementation of proactive assessment profiling, along with performance limiting factors of elite competition horses.
Hadyn is a regular international lecturer and contributor to equestrian-related symposiums in farriery, primarily in North America, South America, Australia, Mexico and Europe and he continues to operate a mixed referral practice for all equine disciplines with a particular interest in lameness and poor performance.

The Hoof Architect, the 2nd speaker has been announced for Focus 24.
Ula has done some really interesting work on Hoof morphology and conformation/posture.
Really looking forward to Ula Krzanowska MSc Architecture speaking at this year's Focus 🤩
Ula, The Hoof Architect, is a full-time farrier with an architectural background. She currently works on all types of horses, from pasture pets to high performance horses and referral cases from veterinarians. She incorporates the understanding of three-dimensional space and physics into assessing hoof form, with the emphasis on the two-way relationship between hoof morphology and conformation/posture.

Good communication between the farrier and vet is key for achieving a horse’s athletic potential and maintaining soundness.
Ana and Emily had a lovely visit to Perry last week to work with the farrier and take foot balance x-rays during shoeing. Perry was a superstar and stood on the blocks so we could x-ray his feet 🐴🐴🐴
