Thank you to all the staff at BAL. Your kindness and support was my lifeline during the pandemic. I am looking forward to continue my studies, as well as being a "study buddy". Whenever I walk into a centre in Aylesbury, or get into a online meeting or classroom, I feel I am at home, enveloped in love, care and warmth. The manner in which everyone took up the challenges posed during lockdown and even now was phenomenal, the amount of hard work and creative ideas that went into reaching out to learners and keeping us all engaged, preparing us for new challenges as we resume a new "normal"; is excellent. 💓💓💓

🧵 Meet Linda

After retirement I sat down and thought about what I now had time for. I had sewn as a teenager, but a lot had changed. Jersey fabric, twin needles, overlockers. Where do you start? Plus, I wanted to make and wear clothes in fabrics of my choice, styles that suited me, and most importantly fitted me.

I contacted my local Beaconsfield Adult Learning Centre, and the rest is history. My first project was a tunic dress, where I learnt to sew with jersey, and to adjust a commercial pattern to fit me. Then followed a jumpsuit, dresses, trousers, denim jacket and my latest project a Chanel jacket. 🧥

It has been one step at a time over several years, but with Christine, our tutor, I was able to set myself learning goals, overcome them and have clothes of my choice, style and colouring to wear at the end.

Have you been inspired by Linda’s story? Learn how to make your own clothes on one of our sewing courses.

Enrol on the next sewing course at Beaconsfield via the link below:

🍎 Rare Apple Trees saved at Missenden Walled Garden Charity

In Autumn 2021, our gardening tutor Lindsay Engers was asked by the Missenden Walled Garden, if he could graft and replant two cultivars of endangered apple trees in their orchard.

👩‍🌾 Lindsay and learners on the gardening course that meet there once a week, gathered bud wood in February from both trees.

The separately labelled twigs were then taken to the rare fruit supplier in Ludgershall near Brill.

This autumn, three of each tree were collected and taken back to the Walled Garden for planting.

Lindsay says, “We think one of the trees is Newton Wonder, the other may be Peasegood Nonsuch but we will wait and see when they crop in 5 years’ time!”

Lindsay's next gardening course at Missenden Walled Garden starts on Wednesday 11 January. Click here to book your place https://adultlearningbc.ac.uk/courses/practical-gardening-walled-garden-missenden-abbey-f3ga31aaot22223/
