Children do not need every minute planned for them. Sometimes they need space, friends and the freedom to turn an ordinary outdoor moment into a game.
A new University of Exeter study has drawn attention to how much children’s outdoor play has reduced over generations. At Elmhurst Pre-School, free and structured play gives children opportunities to be active, build confidence and learn together.
Outdoor play can be noisy, creative and sometimes a little messy. It is also where children practise making choices, solving little problems and enjoying the world around them.

The children have been busy this week making handprint cards for their No.1 Dads, and having lots of fun bringing nursery rhymes to life in the tuff tray. Five Little Ducks went for a swim among the lily pads, and Humpty Dumpty had his great fall (made from cereal, so no eggshell clean up needed!).
Lots of giggles, sticky fingers and proud artists. Happy Father's Day to all our brilliant dads from everyone at Aktiva!

🦋 From caterpillar to butterfly! 🦋
The children have watched our caterpillars grow, form their chrysalises and emerge as beautiful painted butterflies. They've checked on them every day, learnt all about the life cycle and practised lots of patience along the way. This week we set them free. A lovely way to learn about nature and caring for living things.

Children enjoyed creating their own fairy and nature themed sensory trays. They used coloured rice, hay, moss, shells, and small figures to build little worlds.
Different textures, making up stories together, and moving the pieces around to create their own stories. A lovely activity for encouraging sharing and fine motor skills.

Today at Aktiva Elmhurst, the children painted, poured and built their own little scenes using different materials.
They are practising how to hold and control tools, trying out their own ideas and learning what happens when they mix, move and create.
Simple activities, but so much learning happening every day

Today at Aktiva Elmhurst, the children played with push and pull, moving cars through rice and soil and seeing what happens.
They are learning how things move, building early problem solving, strengthening fine motor skills and starting to understand simple cause and effect.
