Wonderful achievement! Be inspired!

At 86, local swimmer Bill Letch from Budleigh Salterton has shown the world that age is no barrier to staying active, challenging yourself and achieving something remarkable.

Swimming is a great all-round exercise but so is karate - and you’re never too old to start!

Karate can offer older adults many of the same benefits: movement, balance, coordination, strength, flexibility and, perhaps most importantly, a sense of achievement and a welcoming community.

You don't need to be young, super-fit or already experienced. You just need to be willing to take that first step whatever your age.

Across our organisation we have members still actively training in their 90s. Here at our Axminster club, we have several members in their 60s and 70s, some experienced and some just starting out on their journey - why not come and join us! They'll tell you how rewarding they find it.

Most people would be proud just to still be swimming at 86 — Bill Letch is out there setting British records and making the world rankings 😮🏅

Opportunity to train at Exeter Shotokan Karate Club (50 Church Rd, St Thomas, Exeter EX2 9AU) with Sensei Jack Somers over the weekend of 5th and 6th September 2026.

Jack is a dedicated member of the Karate Union of Great Britain (KUGB), holding a 5th Dan black belt and proudly representing the organization since 2001. Over the years, he has showcased his skills at various Regional, National, and International events, consistently placing on the podium.

He has been an integral part of the KUGB England Team, training and competing with them for many years. His hard work and dedication have earned him multiple European and World medals in both individual and team categories, as well as numerous accolades at the Regional and National levels within the KUGB.
