[05/10/21]   📣Info for new P1 parents📣

❗️Edited to add: hopefully everyone has seen the email with a link to the Sway from the school about the P1 transition. If not, please email the school ASAP.

If your child is going up to P1 after the summer we thought it might be useful to gather some useful info for you.
❗️Please let us know if you have any top tips or info you’d like to have known before your child went up.
💭 And please ask questions if you have any!

🧑‍🏫 No decision has been made about which teacher will teach P1 next year.
🏫 No arrangements have been confirmed yet for a transition visits to the school, and with the teacher - due to restrictions during the public health crisis, these visits will only be available to children attending the school nursery.
📧 In due course a transition Sway (like PowerPoint but online) will be sent out to ALL families.
❗️We’ll let you know when the above is answered/available.
❗️The school has confirmed that parents whose children don’t attend the school nursery will receive communications about starting school ie emails, the Sway.

Children are expected to wear uniform which consists of:
👖Skirt/pinafore/trousers/short trousers (grey/black)
👕Poloshirt (black or white) or blouse (white) or shirt (white)
✅Sweatshirt/cardigan (maroon)
👔There is a tie available, both elasticated and regular
❗️Please note, children to not have to wear branded uniform, but the school have noted it is preferable that branded sweatshirt/cardigan be worn.
🏫 Branded uniform can be ordered from the school (you should’ve had an email) or contact Blue Crags in Strathmiglo, who offer a much cheaper service.

👞🧥🎒For shoes, coats and bags, your children can wear whatever parents decide is appropriate. There is a school branded jacket that you can buy.

🏈If PE is inside: gymbags should have shorts, t-shirt and gymshoes/trainers. Usually these would be kept in school.
🌲If PE is outside: children wear PE kit to school. This would usually mean long-sleeved tops and leggings/joggers, depending on the weather.
❗️The school still doesn’t know if PE will be inside or outside from August.

💧 Do provide your child with a full water bottle and a playpiece 🍪
✏️ You can send your child with a pencil case but it is not essential.

✍️ Write your kids name in EVERYTHING! Shoes etc as well as clothes. There are 100s of items of lost property every year.

Parent Feedback Survey

📣An Open Letter regarding the proposed cessation of dedicated Head Teacher at Auchtermuchty Primary School📣

The parent teacher association for Auchtermuchty Primary School – Supporters of Auchtermuchty School (SAS) – is appalled at Fife Council’s decision to abolish the head teacher position at Auchtermuchty Primary School and instead install a head teacher that is shared with Strathmiglo Primary School. We feel the decision will have a huge negative impact on our school – and frankly insulted at the way it has been communicated with such a blatant lack of consultation. We feel that the timescale has been rushed and rationale for the decision not provided.

➡️Parents⬅️ please take a couple of minutes to complete this survey: https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/KJ77MPP

📧If you would like to voice your concern at this, please do get in touch with us at [email protected] or contact your local councillors, MSPs and Fife Council.

Here are some points to highlight our position:

‼️ Auchtermuchty Primary School and Strathmiglo Primary School jointly contain in the region of 250 pupils making this a very large group of pupils for any one head teacher to manage. The number of pupils requires a full time individual head teacher for each school. While shared head teacher positions are in operation at other schools in Fife, this volume of pupils is unusual.
‼️ The policy of abolishing teaching head teacher positions at schools in Fife has been mentioned as one of the reasons for this changed role. As the head teacher at Auchtermuchty is not currently a teaching one anyway, this policy has been wrongly applied to Auchtermuchty.
‼️ Strathmiglo and Auchtermuchty Primary Schools are different schools with very different challenges and a head teacher must be on site to address the particular situations of each school.
‼️ We have been advised by Fife Council that the proposed new, shared head teacher role will be an appealing one that will attract a strong leader. In practice, this has not been the case, with the first round of applications attracting insufficient applicants and the second round of applications failing to attract candidates of a strong enough calibre to allow the process to continue. The process is still scheduled to restart in early March – a railroading through of a policy, despite evidence that it is not working.
‼️ We fail to understand how this role will not negatively impact the existing staff, with teams put under additional pressure to make up for the half of the week when the head teacher is not present.
‼️ This decision has been rushed through with no consultation in advance with parents. Parents were informed of the decision just days before the job was advertised, with existing staff given a similar level of notice.
‼️ We have asked to see the educational rationale and needs analysis for this decision – no rationale has been provided.
‼️ The proposed head teacher role will not be supported by a full time depute head teacher at each school. This does not provide enough support for this changed structure.
‼️ The decision has been made because of the retirement of the incumbent head teacher at Strathmiglo Primary School and the fact that the head teacher position at Auchtermuchty is currently held by an acting head teacher. To make such an important decision, which has such an impact on our school (and our local community), based on convenient timing seems incredibly unfair and again, based on costs rather than the required educational needs of Auchtermuchty Primary School.
‼️ We do not see how combining a head teacher role between two separate communities is an effective strategy for keeping staff and our children and communities safer from Covid-19.

Upon our initial outcry at the decision, we called a meeting of the parent teacher council, at which representatives from Fife Council’s educational team attended. We felt strongly that their motivation was to pacify parents rather than really listen to concerns. On requesting a halt to the process, we were ignored and again the process has continued to be rushed through.

The school in Auchtermuchty is a critical part of our town’s community and at a time, when so many families are struggling, it provides a very real support for the community beyond the school gates too. This is an incredibly difficult time for many families and consequently, is a time when we need increased leadership and resources.
