This morning, the children at Lyng Montessori explored the work of Norfolk artist Bryony Knight, focusing on her beautiful landscape painting “Light on Wells Beach.” We looked closely at the colours, textures and movement in the artwork, sharing our ideas about the sea, sky and sandy beach.

Working together as a team, the children created their own large-scale interpretation using brushes, sponges and finger painting. Over the course of the morning, they experimented with colour mixing, texture and mark-making, building their artwork layer by layer.

What a fantastic example of creativity and collaboration!

At Norfolk Montessori nurseries children learn through hands on discovery, independence, confidence through choice and purposeful activity.

The Montessori Stereognostic Bags demonstrate this beautifully by helping children refine their tactile senses by identifying familiar objects and shapes through touch alone.

Today at Lyng Montessori nursery, the children explored the lifecycle of a butterfly through a creative loose parts activity inspired by the book ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar’.

Using felt, buttons, sticks, card and other loose parts, the children carefully arranged patterns, colours and shapes to design their own beautiful butterflies. This activity encouraged creativity, fine motor development, problem solving and early mathematical thinking as the children explored symmetry, texture and design.

As part of our lifecycle topic, we talked about how caterpillars transform into butterflies and will be keenly observing our own classroom Painted Lady caterpillars over the coming weeks as they make their transformation!

Across the nurseries we celebrated World Book Day by inviting families to attend ‘share a story’ sessions. It was fantastic to welcome so many of you into the nurseries to share stories with the children, bringing books to life using a variety of engaging props.

The children loved seeing their favourite stories acted out and explored in such a hands-on way. During circle time, we also shared beloved books from home, helping to build connections between nursery and family life while celebrating each child’s unique interests.

Thank you to everyone who joined us—your involvement made the day so meaningful and memorable. It was a joy to see such a strong love of reading shared by our whole community

Across the nurseries we recently celebrated our love of books and had a wonderful time bringing our favourite stories to life!
The children enjoyed listening to familiar tales and exploring them in a hands-on way using a variety of props. It was lovely to see the children so engaged, joining in with repeated phrases and predicting what might happen next!

Last term at Lyng Montessori, the children became fully immersed in their topic ‘The Solar System’.

During this activity they carefully used paintbrushes to sweep away the sand and reveal hidden pictures of planets underneath. As each planet appeared, they talked about what they could see and matched the pictures to the correct planets above. The children loved the excitement of uncovering each new planet and seeing if they could find its match!

This activity encouraged curiosity about space while developing fine motor skills, and sparked lots of conversations about the planets and their properties!

At Attlebridge Montessori, the children have been exploring how birds make their nests.

Using a variety of natural materials such as twigs, leaves, moss and soft fibres, the children carefully designed and created their own nests. They talked about which materials might make a nest strong, which ones would keep eggs warm, and how birds carry materials to build their homes.

This activity encouraged creativity, problem solving and a deeper understanding of the natural world. The children were so proud of their finished nests and loved comparing their different designs!

The children at Cawston Montessori have been exploring a dinosaur-themed matching activity, using different sized dinosaur bones and carefully matching them to the correct spaces on the board. This activity supported the development of early mathematical skills such as size comparison and problem-solving, while also strengthening fine motor control, hand–eye coordination, and concentration. The children showed great focus and perseverance as they experimented, checked their choices, and celebrated their successes.
