I got some photos taken on Friday to show off our Bowman Learning Hub and Otters Crafts and Play Club but I forgot I'm a mum of 3 including a 3 month old and I don't have as much time as I imagine or need. So this little snap shot will have to do until I can get my act together ๐Ÿคฆ๐Ÿปโ€โ™€๏ธ๐Ÿ˜‚

Holiday mode on! Is there anything nicer than collecting sea glass along the beach?
Whilst I'm away Naomi is running her final session on Thursday before making the exciting move to Devon and then we have a few sessions left this August on the 20th, 24th and 28th before normal service resumes from 3rd Sept!
What are you doing this August?

All our groups are mixed ages, and I mean properly mixed ages not just one or 2 ages together. Otter's caters for children as young as 2 (with an adult on site) right up to 9+.
When I was a teacher the idea of mixed aged classes filled me with dread but now I can't imagine limiting my sessions to just one age group and here's why:

1) It boosts social skills!
Younger children watching older children interacting as well as older children developing patience to work with and explain things to younger group members. These kinds of interactions happen throughout the session. Older children modelling and the younger members encouraging a wider set of skills in our older members.

2) It helps build confidence and leadership skills.
When older children help younger children in our group with activities it helps foster a sense of self belief and confidence in their own abilities as well as support leadership skills such as demonstrating, sharing and collaborating are all fostered in a mixed aged group. Younger participants also feel part of wider activities rather than separated so they foster self-confidence and curiosity.

3) It promotes emotional well-being.
Mixed ages reduce the chance of children comparing themselves as they're working at different rates on different activities. This means more time is focused on joy and discovery rather than trying to beat someone else.

4) Better academic outcomes
Being in a mixed aged group means younger members are exposed to a wider range of topics, language and skills. Whilst older members support learning by teaching and sharing their ideas.
It's one of my favourite things to do; sit back and watch our older group members teach and support the younger group members and the shared joy and sense of achievement when a concept or skill is mastered.

5) Real world experience
I genuinely find it hard to think of another setting other than modern schools where you're grouped based on when your birthday is. Most adults eventually develop friendships across age groups and generations. Workplaces are full of teams with mixed ages and leadership roles filled based on experience and understanding not simply who's the oldest.
We understand that our youngest children learn at different paces and that as adults we hold different experiences and interests meaning we have different strengths.
Our groups show this, they learn to interact with different children and share their own knowledge and experience in a more natural environment.
For all of these reasons our groups champion mixed ages. We want children to be confident, happy and to go at their own pace, following their own ideas and keep that innate love of learning and curiosity children are born with.
If you believe in all of these then definitely give our groups a go!

Using my mat leave wisely to take part in plenty of butterfly counts for Butterfly Conservation Big Butterfly Count. My eldest loves it too and it's a great way to practice;
- counting (maths)
- describing (English)
- habitats (science/geography)
- data entry (computing/maths)
It's also great for encouraging the boys outside and to slow down a bit.
Have you taken part yet?

Play is Learning! ๐Ÿดโ€โ˜ ๏ธ๐Ÿ—บ๏ธ

At our recent Bowman Learning Hub home ed session, we used treasure maps to explore instructions, keys, grid references, directions, and geographical features.

The children had a brilliant time using rice to shape their islands and dice to randomize their features, before completely following their own ideas to take the project further. This is child-led learning at its finest! ๐ŸŽฒ๐ŸŒพ
