Resources for learning at home during school closures in Northumberland

During this lockdown I will continue to post useful resources for those who require assistance with remote learning/home schooling.
Here’s a link from NCC with a range of resources for both teachers and parents. For teachers and parents. We've put together some of the sites, apps and resources you might find helpful while schools are closed. Last updated 1st Septemebr 2020.

📚 Is your child isolating?

✅ Do you have concerns that they may be ‘falling behind’ ?

✅ Maybe they are struggling in a lesson and need to go back over the content that has been taught in school.
✅ Maybe their confidence has taken a dip due to lockdown, personal/family issues or because they have low self esteem.

📚 If your child is in years 3-9 at school, then I can help. 👍🏻
I can ring you for a chat and see if I can help in any way. Discretion assured. Sessions carried out remotely due to Covid restrictions.

Feel free to give me a call, message or ping me an email and I’ll get back to you ASAP.

[09/23/20]   Hi everyone! How’s everyone finding their ‘new style of normal?’
Tutoring slots are available however as we have strict restrictions in the area, these can only be fulfilled remotely.
If you’d like to discuss some support for your child, please get in touch.
Confidence is assured.

[03/23/20]   I don’t post emotional, critical or political views but I feel so very strongly that this is something which needs to be addressed.

In this worrying and unprecedented time, I feel heartily sorry for parents/carers and children. 😢

I’ve seen some work which has been sent home by schools with a strict timetable including set lunchtimes and break times, times to log on for ‘registration’ as well as different subjects which reflect the variety on a child’s school timetable.

I’ve also heard from and read comments from those parents/carers I know personally as well as those I’ve never met before, which truly fills me despair.

Parents are struggling-not only with jobs, income, empty grocery shelves, arranging childcare/trying to care for children whilst trying to distance work, maybe isolate their whole family, be apart from their own parents, that they usually see on an almost daily basis and also try to provide as much support for those family members self isolating.
These are the practical aspects of everyday life for many of us right now, this is without factoring in any current health issues.

😐 I find it incredible that there is an audacity and sheer lack of understanding and empathy of some schools who expect parents/carers to stick to such timetables (example above) and perhaps do it with several children of different ages whilst also trying to work from home!
I’ve been teaching almost 20 years and in that time I’ve literally “been there, seen it and got the t-shirt!”
By that I mean I’ve taught in some of the most challenging environments; I’ve been physically attacked (whilst pregnant) been verbally attacked by parents/carers, been intimidated and had my professional judgement called into question by children I’ve been teaching. I’ve worked supply and had chairs thrown, moonies pulled at me and I’ve been called some terrible things.

💡 Now here’s the thing-if I’m telling you that nobody can get a child of their own, let alone more than one, of different ages to have sessions of different subjects every hour with a set lunchtime whilst also distance working themselves to complete tasks (maybe with only one device at their disposal) but a school thinks this is possible, then they’ve clearly missed the point in setting work in the first place.
Imposing such strict regulation upon families at an already stressful time will only lead to one thing ➡️

If any school disagrees and would like to show me how it can be done please feel free to contact me via this page, I’d be more than happy to hear your thoughts.

Oh and did I mention a global pandemic the scale of which is unlikely to have ever been seen before for us to deal with as well??

My advice to parents would be this-

❤️ Don’t doubt yourself, you’ve been your child’s most influential educator since the day they were yours..

❤️ Go with your gut-if something doesn’t seem right then trust your instincts.

❤️ Talk and spend quality time with your children, share memories, have a movie afternoon, log onto a zoo webcam,do a research project of their choosing (even if it it Lego!), look at a map of the world and see how many places there are you’d like to visit when this is all over, write a postcard (hand drawn if little ones) to a loved one/neighbour who you know lives alone-your options are as limited as your imagination.

❤️ Have debates, do role plays, make mini movies.

❤️ When it comes to the school work-children won’t remember it in future years-they will remember this time you all spent together and will have some fond memories.

This post is not targeted at any one school-it is the result of a culmination of views over the last week or so from various sources-of which there are more than ‘a few’.
There is no perfect solution to this, there never will be-let’s just all try to do what we can to support our children.

(Just for clarification-I’m more than happy with the provision my children’s school have made and fully support them.)
