St David's Girls' School; The Welsh Girls' School

St David's School may have closed in 2009 BUT we are still here in spirit! The Archive here is full of pictures, names and information.

The Welsh Charity School was founded in Clerkenwell in 1716, moved to Ashford in 1856 and became all-girls in 1883. In the late 60's it became known as St David's School for Girls. It closed in 2009 and the site was bought by St James Senior Boys' School. A room is preserved for the continuing memory of St David's on site and we would be interested to hear from Old Girls.

The last few weeks of the archive here in this building. It goes to Wales on 26th July. I've enjoyed my 9 years here and I hope that you will keep on asking for things from The National Library of Wales. You can all be assured that they will look after it professionally! With best wishes to you all. Penny

Down to the last three boxes and I have found a school case containing a complete set of exercise work books belonging to Peggy Slater, who was at the school from 1930 and was born on 20.08.1917. Sadly these cannot go to the archive in Wales. Are there any relatives who can claim them? Please contact me. Penny

Hi everyone. Almost Easter now and I'm hoping to complete my collection of Speech Day programmes before the summer. If you can help me, I would be so pleased. The missing ones are
1888-1911 (inclusive), 1913, 1916 - 1930(inclusive), 1932, 1934, 1942-47(if there were any), 1950, 1966, 1968, 1971 - 74(inclusive). If you post any you have to the school, I can reimburse the postage. Many thanks for your continued support. Penny

Does anyone have a picture of the Chapel exterior pre 1939? They are repairing the finials and would like to restore them to the original design. Scan and send to my email: [email protected] if possible. Penny

Have started the great scanning of photos project! Have got as far as 1910.Looks promising.

First day of term here, and plenty to do. I have just advised on restoring the chapel - I could supply photos of how it used to be! I'm still here to respond to queries and to keep things going. Summer is really over now and the building is quite cold - remember?! I'm still collecting artefacts, so keep them coming. Penny

Nearly half term and work continues. The archive is to be passed over to another organisation - either Surrey or Wales - by summer 2016. I will keep you posted. Meanwhile lots of 'stuff' still to sort. Keep in touch and come for a visit if you're near. Let's hope the good weather continues. Penny

Easter now and the archive continues. It's future is uncertain, but we have at least one more year here at St James Boys' - although we will be moving to a less central position.
I am still on the lookout for additional material to add, so please, if your Spring Cleaning unearths unneeded memorabilia, send it to me - Penny Bristow St James School, Church Road, Ashford, TW15 3DZ.
A Happy Easter to you all. Penny

Last posting before Christmas. Hope all those followers out there have a good festive season. Still working hard here, and will be putting the archive onto a professional package next year (New Year's Resolution) so that the contents can be posted on a website. I'm using CALM, for those of you in the trade. Penny

I'm still finding back files from St David's in odd cupboards around the school. The last bundle had loads of information about the stained glass window, and all the Old Girls who had contributed and came to the celebrations. A treasure trove of names and addresses! Do you think it would be worth organising a reunion ten years on - in 2017? Penny

Made a good historical exhibition for the Fun Day here and the display is still up. I never found the original plans though! Another plea if you have any Speech Day programmes, magazines, photos, play programmes etc. I'm always on the look out. Penny
