🎸 Acoustic or electric: which is best for a beginner?
A parent asked me this recently, and the honest answer is: neither is automatically better!
The best first guitar is usually the one your child is most excited to play.
🪕 ACOUSTIC GUITAR
✅ No amplifier or cable needed
✅ Easy to pick up and play anywhere
✅ Great for strumming and singer-songwriter styles
⚠️ The larger body and thicker strings can make it slightly harder for small hands
⚡ ELECTRIC GUITAR
✅ Thinner body and lighter strings
✅ Often easier and more comfortable for beginners
✅ Perfect for rock, pop and heavier music
⚠️ You’ll also need an amplifier and cable
📏 WHAT SIZE?
Guitars come in 1/2, 3/4 and full sizes.
Many younger or smaller children are more comfortable with a 3/4-size guitar, while older children and teenagers can often manage a full-size model. However, children grow at different rates, so choosing purely by age isn’t always reliable.
The important thing is that they can sit comfortably, reach the first few frets and get their arm around the guitar without struggling.
My advice? Don’t automatically buy an acoustic because it seems like the “normal” place to start. If your child dreams of playing rock songs, an electric guitar may be the much better choice.
