Technique without concept, is just a dance that breaks down when the conditions vary.

I’ve watched students drill techniques over and over again perfectly and still lose it in live rounds, because they’re chasing the shape of the technique and not the idea behind it.

We teach concept first. Sophistication via simplification. Once that clicks, the moves start making sense on their own.

It can take longer at the start. It’s also the only way it actually stays with you.

Beginners Course runs twice weekly, Mondays and Fridays. Link in bio if you want to see how we’ve structured it.

On Saturday, Matt Whitt was awarded his black belt.

8.5 years. Trained 4-7 days a week for most of them. Over a hundred instructionals. Hundreds of matches.

In his own words, he still feels like he is barely getting started. That is not modesty. That is the mindset that gets you here.

Congratulations, Matt. Student for life.

Years in the making.

Matt first stepped on the mats as a 20 year old, back when jiu jitsu was still rare in this corner of Kent. Life moved the gym away, but the idea never left him. In February 2018 he came back, and he has barely missed a week since.

In the 2 years since Matt joined Ascend he has attended a staggering 550 training sessions. He has also spent over a year coaching on these mats, raising the games of our students and his fellow coaches alike.

That is what this sport looks like when someone takes it seriously. Not the highlight reel. The hours. The consistency. The willingness to keep learning and keep giving.

Some journeys take years to complete. Some are almost there.

June 20th. Be there.

Summer Grading Day. Saturday 20th June.

A grading at Ascend isn’t a test you book. We don’t promote for time on the mat. We promote when you’re ready.

That’s why these moments matter. Months and years of consistent work, recognised in front of the people you train with.

This year we’re honoured to welcome Ross Nicholls, ADCC European Champion and Head Coach at London Grapple, to join us for the day.

Details to follow this week.
