WHAT GOES ON BEHIND THE SCENES OF A TUTORING SESSION?
A tutoring session might only last 45 or 60 minutes, but there's a lot that happens before a child ever joins the session.
I don't believe in simply giving every child the same worksheet and hoping it works.
Before planning, I think about:
📚 What can the child already do?
🔎 Where are the gaps?
🎯 What skill do they need to develop next?
🧩 What approach is likely to work best for them?
💡 How can I make the learning engaging without losing sight of the goal?
For my group programmes, I've been building structured progression so that children can develop their skills step by step.
And for 1-to-1 sessions, I can tailor the lesson much more closely to the individual child.
The aim is always the same: meet the child where they are and help them move forward.
That's what happens behind the scenes at Miss Gill's English Tutoring & Support. 💕

THEY CAN READ IT… BUT CAN’T SPELL IT?

This is something I hear quite often.
A child might be able to read a word when they see it, but struggle to spell that same word when they need to write it.

That's because reading and spelling aren't quite the same skill.
Reading gives a child the word and asks them to work out what it says.
Spelling asks them to retrieve the word, identify the sounds, remember the spelling pattern and put those sounds and letters in the right order.

For some children, particularly those who haven't yet developed secure phonics and spelling foundations, that can be really difficult.

The answer isn't always “learn more spellings.”

Sometimes we need to go back and strengthen the underlying skills first.
That's why I teach spelling systematically, looking at what a child already knows, identifying the gaps and building from there.

WHY DOES ENGLISH HAVE SO MANY RULES?

Ever wondered why English spelling can seem so complicated?

It's partly because English has been influenced by lots of different languages over hundreds of years.

Old English developed from the languages brought by the Angles, Saxons and Jutes. Later, Old Norse influenced English through Viking settlement, and after the Norman Conquest in 1066, French had a huge influence on English vocabulary.

So when your child asks:

“Why is English like this?!”

There really is a story behind it!
English isn't always as random as it seems. Understanding where words come from can sometimes help us understand why they look and sound the way they do today.

COULD ONLINE ENGLISH SUPPORT WORK FOR YOUR CHILD?

For some home-educating families, online tutoring can be a really convenient way to add structured English learning to the week.
No travelling.
No rushing out of the house.
Just log in from home and learn.
And online learning doesn't have to mean children simply sitting silently in front of a screen.

My sessions are planned to be friendly, interactive and supportive, with opportunities for children to:
• answer questions
• share their ideas
• practise new skills
• take part in activities
• learn alongside other home-educated children

I currently offer support in:
Phonics | Spelling | Reading | Writing

Sessions are 45 minutes once a week, with small groups designed to give children opportunities to participate and receive support.

And if you're not sure which programme or level your child needs, you don't need to work that out yourself.
Tell me a little about your child and what they're currently finding difficult, and I'll help you find the right starting point.
