EYFS Spotlight: Literacy 📚

At Incredible Kids, we are committed to nurturing a lifelong love of reading from the very beginning of a child’s learning journey 💛. To mark National Literacy Day yesterday, we’re shining a light on the importance of literacy within the EYFS.

Within the EYFS Statutory Framework, literacy is split into three key components: word reading, language comprehension, and writing. Together, these foundations help children develop the skills they need to become confident readers, writers, and communicators.

Within nursery, we support early literacy development through:

📖 Sharing stories and books together.

🎶 Singing songs and nursery rhymes.

💬 Encouraging song and communication.

✏️ Mark-making, drawing, and early writing.

🎭 Role play and imaginative play opportunities.

We also believe learning doesn’t stop here. Families can continue to support literacy at home by exploring the fun activities available on the website below:

Harvest Festival Appeal 🌾

This Harvest Festival, we would love to come together as a nursery community to help make a difference for local families in need.

As part of our celebrations, we are asking our wonderful families to help us give back to our local community by donating items to our chosen charity, Ashby Foodbank. ❤️

Ashby Foodbank provides essential support to individuals and families who may be experiencing difficult times, and your donations can make a real difference to those who need it most.

We would be hugely grateful for donations of long-life, non-perishable items, such as:

Tinned fruit and vegetables.
Tinned pulses.
Tinned meat and fish.
Rice pudding.
Tinned and/or packet instant custard.
Angel delight.
Jelly.
UHT (long-life) milk and juices.
Spray deodorant.
Washing-up liquid.
Toothpaste.
Shampoo.
Shower gel.
Toilet rolls.
Every donation, no matter how big or small, can help someone in our local community.

We hope you can join us in making this year’s Harvest Festival a celebration of kindness, generosity, and supporting those around us. 💛

Donations can be brought into nursery throughout the month of October. 🌾

Thank you for your support.

Library Tour at our Ashby Nursery📚

Our library room is a cosy, welcoming space where stories come to life and imaginations can wander freely. ✨

Filled with a carefully curated selection of books, the space invites children to settle in, explore new worlds, and develop a lifelong love of reading. Alongside our books, we also offer story sacks that bring tales off the page with props, characters, and hands-on exploration to deepen understanding and make storytelling interactive.

Children can also step into our bespoke puppet theatre, where they can retell favourite stories, create their own narratives, and build confidence through playful performance and expression. 🎭

It’s a calm, inspiring space that nurtures language, creativity, and connection – one story at a time. 💛

Solar Eclipse 🌑

After showing lots of interest in yesterday’s solar eclipse, our Pre-School 2 children were keen to find out more about what was happening in the sky! 🌌

To build on their curiosity, we created a special activity in our sensory room to demonstrate how the Moon passes in front of the Sun, creating an eclipse.

The children were captivated by the activity and learning how the Moon's position can change what we see! It was lovely to see their curiosity and engagement as they explored this exciting natural phenomenon! 🔭

🌍 EYFS Spotlight: Understanding the World 🌍

“Understanding the World” is one of the key areas of learning in the EYFS framework. It supports children in making sense of the people, places, and environments around them, helping them build curiosity and confidence in exploring their world.

This area is split into three important strands:

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 People and Communities — Children begin by learning about themselves and their own families before exploring different communities, cultures, religions, relationships, and ways of life locally, nationally, and globally.

🌱 The World — This aspect of the framework supports children in developing an appreciation for nature, science, and the environment. They learn about the impact people can have on the world, including topics such as pollution and habitat destruction, alongside positive actions like recycling, healthcare, and caring for the planet.

💻 Technology — Children are also introduced to technology and how it is used in everyday life. This can include computing, communication, media, smart technology, and learning tools that support development and accessibility.

Children learn through play, exploration, stories, conversations, and real-life experiences. It’s about building curiosity and helping them begin to understand both how the world works and where they fit within it.

Friendship in Early Years 💛

Friendships play such an important role in children’s early development. Through friendships, children learn how to share, communicate, and understand their own feelings as well as others’. These early relationships help build confidence, empathy, and social skills that last a lifetime. Ahead of International Friendship Day, we share how we encourage friendships in our setting:

✨ Creating Opportunities to Play Together

Children learn best through play. Free play and group activities like storytelling, crafts, and games help children interact, cooperate, and build friendships naturally

✨ Positive Adult Interactions

Children often learn by watching and copying adults. Warm, supportive interactions help model how to communicate, share, and build relationships

✨ Small Group Activities

Games and activities in smaller groups help children connect on a more personal level and feel more confident when forming friendships

✨ A Safe and Supportive Environment

Children need to feel safe to express their feelings. Creating spaces where emotions can be shared helps children understand friendships and feel secure

✨ Talking about What Friendship Means

Simple conversations about kindness, sharing, and what makes a good friend help children develop their understanding of relationships.
