Q. What is decoding?
🗣️ Decoding is the process of working out how to say an unfamiliar written word.
To decode a word, you need to know:
* Which sound or sounds each letter in the word makes.
* How to take apart the sounds in a word and blend them together, eg. ‘cat’ is decoded as /c/ /a/ /t/ and blended together we read it as ‘cat’. We use SOUND BUTTONS under each sound (whether or not that sound is made up of one, two, three of four letters).
* Groups of letters (digraphs, trigraphs…) that make a single sound, eg. /sh/ in fish.
📖 Adults can use decoding strategies too. Whenever you come across a word, name or place that you are unfamiliar with, we can still fall back on the same decoding skills we learnt as children.
🧠 Once we encounter a new word enough times, our brain starts to recognise it at a glance so we no longer need to decode it.
